Important Democrats You Should Know (About)

Thomas Jefferson

The third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson can be considered the very first Democrat.  He believed in limited government, free market capitalism, religious freedom, the value of education, and the common man above all else.

Most Democrats today would not consider themselves fans of small governement.  Today's Democrats are in favor of small, effective governement regarding abortion, capital punishment, church/state matters, national budgets, domestic security, and military spending.  Can Democrats rediscover Jefferson, and put him to some use?

Perhaps the text at his gravesite is useful:

Here was buried
Thomas Jefferson
Author of the Declaration of American Independence
of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom
& Father of the University of Virginia

How many modern-day Republicans wish to be know simply for writing an important federal document, a document upholding religious freedom (against government intrusion) and for founding a university?  I say none.

What is your favorite Thomas Jefferson quotation?
Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state.
I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.
In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.
Never trouble another for what you can do for yourself.
Say nothing of my religion. It is known to God and myself alone. Its evidence before the world is to be sought in my life: if it has been honest and dutiful to society the religion which has regulated it cannot be a bad one.
The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive.
The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object.
I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt.

"Ignorance is preferable to error; and he is less remote from the truth who believes nothing, than he who believes what is wrong."  -Thomas Jefferson

I've been ignorant before, and I've been wrong before.  Let me know which one you think this diary is! Just kidding. (very first Washblog diary)

Jefferson was not only for smaller government, but also for an active citenzery. Engaged, education citizens are the key to democracy.

Big R Republicans today call from government out of your life, but not for calling people to solve their common problems by coming together.
