It isn't the WWF Cage-Match we'd like to see, but at least they're pushing SOME buttons, unlike the state Party, which has been conspicuously absent from the
Incredibly Horribly Evil Postcard Attack pushback. Yesterday,
a letter was delivered to Richard DeBolt, House Minority Leader, demanding an apology.
And today, the House Dems held a presser in Olympia. (it's 31 minutes long) Oh, it is a thing of beauty. Every affected Representative was there, and I believe a couple who did NOT see postcards in their district. All of them spoke of the fear people who'd received the postcard felt in being (falsely) told a sex offender was moving into their community. It absolutely terrified people.
All spoke of the disgust they felt for Kevin Carns of the House Republican Caucus and the "Speaker's Roundtable", and his deplorable actions in sending this disgusting hit piece out.
Some key moments: Derek Kilmer said the Republicans in the House that he's spoken to are embarrassed by this, and Bill Grant (16th LD) said Mike Armstrong and Maureen Walsh have both apologized to him. However, as was pointed out shortly after, it isn't about apologies for the Democratic representatives (not that they'd get one from DeBolt anyway - right wing Republicans never, ever apologize), but apologies that are owed to the thousands of people needlessly scared by this card. It seems like sending fake sexual offender notifications should be a crime, you know?
Bill Grant agrees. Around the 19th minute of the presser, he announces that he's introducing legislation to make it a Class C felony to send out fake sexual offender notifications. You go, Bill! Contact him here and let him know you'll support this bill. When there's a bill number, I'll post it here.
