Washington State Journalist and author David Neiwert began Orcinus (pronounced Or - Sinus) back in January, 2003 because he:
recognized a real information gap in much of what was available through mainstream media, especially regarding stories that I believed were of real significance to understanding our national political and cultural scene.
He's done, essentially, what I would have expected many more in the honorable profession of journalism to have done -- stepped outside mainstream media which is failing us just when we desperately need it most -- to carry on with communicating the news. Neiwert focuses on"right-wing extremism in modern American politics," border militias, the rise of pseudo-fascism, eliminationist rhetoric, etc., also diverging into environmental and other issues. Everything I've read of his has been insightful, fact- and concept-rich, readable. Consider, for example, a simple construction, the description of Bush Jr. as grotesquely shallow. Yeah, that's right.
On the occasion of Orcinus' 3 millionth visitor -- and his yearly fundraising drive, he has posted an essay modestly entitled Some Thoughts on Blogging. Do go, read, contribute if you can to his fundraiser ($5). Here, again,'tis
