Dwight Pelz coming to 36th to discuss Sen. Cantwell's candidacy

On February 10th, I sent a letter to Matt Butler, inviting someone from Sen. Cantwell's campaign to our 36th LD meeting on Thursday. (See my letter at the bottom of this post.) I wanted to give the campaign a chance to explain to the membership whether Sen. Cantwell wants the enthusiastic support of rank-and-file Democrats.

I also asked our Chair, Peter House, to invite someone from the campaign to our meeting.

Today Peter House has informed me that Dwight Pelz is coming to our meeting on Thursday to discuss Sen. Cantwell's candidacy.

I imagine that Dwight Pelz will entertain questions. If you would like to be in on the discussion, our meeting starts at 7 pm, at the Labor Temple on Feb. 16th.

I note that Mark Wilson is also scheduled to speak at the meeting.

Here is the letter I sent to Matt Butler:

Dear Mr. Butler,

. . . I'm writing to invite a representative from Sen. Cantwell's campaign to attend our 36th District membership meeting on Thursday, February 16th, at the Labor Temple. The festivities begin at 7:00 pm.

A resolution is on the agenda that concerns Sen. Cantwell. You will find the resolution in our newsletter, an electronic copy of which can be found at the following link:

Many of us rank-and-file Democrats have the distinct impression that Sen. Cantwell is unconcerned about securing the enthusiastic support of rank-and-file Democrats. If this is not the case, I would appreciate hearing why the campaign believes the senator merits the energetic support of the district's hardworking PCOs. The membership meeting will afford an excellent opportunity for the campaign to make its case.

Sincerely,

David Edelman
PCO 3318

And Cantwell has put him there. Remember that it's his job to get Cantwell elected no matter who likes her or doesn't like her.

As for Wilson, he has told me he will support Cantwell in the general and will campaign actively for her. So hold him to that.

See you all there tomorrow. The 36th wasn't half as much fun when I lived there.

If perception is reality, then the world must be flat and the sun must revolve around it.

...hehehehe.

We'll see if Pelz is a Chairman or a hack.

I do think it's interesting that these punks over at the Cantwell campaign can't be bothered to do their own constituent outreach and then all of a sudden need the state Chair to do it for them.

But now I think it's clear how resources are wasted because Cantwell is hurting the ticket. Instead of doing real outreach on the issues (as David Edelman and others have been working tirelessly to help her do), Cantwell is getting high-handed.

I hope she remembers what happened when Nickels sent the Deputy Mayor to the 36th. We may see a Wilson endorsement yet.

I'm sorry I forgot to say this.

PCO 3318 has shown that he is a principled progressive who is willing to engage with the party to an extent where others' patience might well have run out.

David Edelman has clearly thought out the political possibilities of a Democratic Party position on the war far more carefully and in more detail than the Party has. There is a humanitarian crisis happening that the Democrats could be highlighting and writing legislation to help solve. It would help troop morale, it would help the Iraqis, it would make Americans understand that war has terrible costs and it would show how brutal and incompetent the Bush Administration is.

Depleted Uranium shells is an issue that gets people thinking. The use of White Phosphorous in anti-personnel weapons is another. All the dictatorships we are supporting in the "war on terrorism" is another important issue, revealing Bush's commitment to spreading democracy is nothing more than sham propoganda.

Progressives like Edelman are THINKING about these issues, while knee-jerk conservative suck-ups like Cantwell are screwing the Party out of solid, vote-getting positions.
