Public hearing for SB 6221, public funding for local campaigns

Cross posted at BetterDonkey.

SB 6221
, which would allow counties and cities to publically fund local election campaigns, will be the subject of a public hearing by the House State Government Operations & Accountability committee next Wednesday. The bill already passed the state senate by a mostly party line vote.

I won't be able to make the hearing, but I'll be writing my representative on the committee, Sam Hunt. Here are the rest of the members of the committee.

Poll

Will you support an initiative in your county/town for public funding of elections?
Yes, I'll even get it started
Heck no, let them raise their own money (stupid politicians)
We can do that?

Why do just local public funding?  Why not statewide?  Why not the Arizona or Maine model?  Sure, I'm for this bill, but we ought to really have a conversation about what kind of public funding scheme we want.  I'm not satisfied with this one.

I've recently seen Wyatt King speak at the 43rd LD Dems.  This is good stuff.  I also attended the WPC's board meeting last weekend.  The message I got was there's a good likelihood that this bill will get passed.  Of course, these things change day to day.

My understanding is this bill removes an inadvertent prohibition to public financing of campaigns.  Then each jurisdiction can do it's own thing.  For instance, Seattle already has a pre-existing law for public financing.

I believe public financing is just one peice of the puzzle.  We also need to restore the fairness doctrine (equal time given to everyone).  As well as making the political debates publicly owned, vs owned and controlled by the parties themselves.

Inch by inch, we'll reclaim and rebuild our democracy.
