Great Legislative session = Great election year for Dems

This year there were already all kinds of reasons for democrats to win seats in legislative races across our state. The dismal ratings of R's on the national sceen, a booming local economy, key vacancies to fill and so on.
This legislative session was the best state wide in years and the best for Eastern Washington in decades.
The following link is for the AP session wrap up known as winners and loosers. The story gives a good overview.

So how does this all play in this election year?
Well incumbents will be hard to throw out. This is more true for democrats than for republicans but overall things are going well and it will be an incumbent year.
Gains in the house will be stressed by how many seats need to be held but we should expect to see some both in suburbia and rural Washington. In the senate democrats should pick up the open seats and potentially in Spokane. Also we will see some big democratic primary fights as house members vie for the higher house in the 43rd and in a district to be named later.

For all the talk about the general voter's distaste over the 2004 gubernatorial election outcome, I find it odd how unwilling voters are about sticking it to the Democrats.

Democrats are content to do business, which is important in a few areas:

  1. Passing a gas tax to fix roads
  2. Squaring away the water rights issue for a long, long time
  3. Med-mal reform (the GOP will bitch and whine forever that they didn't get caps on lawyer fees, but by giving up a little, the Dems put the issue to bed for a generation)

It may be unpopular to say here, but I thought Speaker Chopp's unwillingness to sign off on the Wal-Mart Bill may be a smart, crafty move.  If anything, Dems can revisit the issue.
