Happy Birthday PNW Topic Hotlist!

The history of the living world can be summarized as the elaboration of ever more perfect eyes within a cosmos in which there is always something more to be seen.
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Phenomenon of Man

Daniel Kirkdorffer over at The Road to 2008 tells us that it's the first anniversary of Pacific Northwest Topic Hotlist.  The Hot Topics List is a big step forward for our region's progressive blogosphere.   It is a key to a 'seeing', 'thinking' online community.  Before the list, the blogs had a rudimentary network of their own -- consisting of the cross-links and blog rolls that individual blogs included.  Now we've got a central nervous system.  The list -- along with the NPI's Pacific Northwest Portal -- serve in very different ways to achieve this on the regional level.

Daniel says it better: "Suddenly one voice, perhaps buried in the multitude of blogs out there, can now be better heard because of an association with other voices. The collective voices talking about the same issues can better highlight that issue."

That's what we're all about here. Seeing more clearly, speaking with more collective power.  Happy Birthday PNW Topic Hot List!

The presence of the Hotlist at Washblog has been a big contributor to growing the reach of the Hotlist blogs.  I am very grateful that Brian was one of the earliest supporters.  I am hopeful that over the next few months more bloggers will be added as contributors of content and hosts of the Hotlist.

The key to this is both the combination of technology doing the heavy lifting and guidance from a human hand to ensure the automation actually produces valid and useful groupings of blog entries on the topics we're all talking about.

Another hope is that I can grow the Oregon and Idaho side of things more, and hopefully get some help with topic monitoring activities for issues in those states I'm less familiar with.

But this has been a good start, and I'm very happy with where things have gone with it in the first 12 months.
