Does anyone else think the DNC doorhangers are LAME?

I am planning to do the DNC Neighbor-to-Neighbor canvassing in my precinct (near White Center) today. Another precinct in West Seattle may follow--the one assigned to me.

I'm looking at these doorhangers designed by the national Dem Party. I sure wish we weren't stuck with these. They sorta SUCK. Bad graphic design and lame message, IMO.

I'm wincing at the thought of distributing these. Read why, below:

1. BAD GRAPHIC DESIGN. The first rule is: don't make people WORK to read the thing (unless you're a punk band or something).

The printed piece is less legible than the screen image. It's over-designed, with fancy shading effects in the background, bullets, and display text, but the effects actually diminish legibility.

Some of the text, including the headlines on the list of "bold new directions" is in blue type on blue background. Difficult to read, even with normal vision.

Dark red text on a blue background; again, not easy to read.

Other text is white on a blue background, or dark on a white background. That's the text that stands out clearly.

2. LAME MESSAGE: Some of the six "bold new directions" especially the last three, sound like rather vague feelgood goals that every politician of every party promises, every election season.

The first one "Honest Leadership and Open Government" is the best, and the only one that directly challenges the present government: "We will end the Republican culture of corruption and restore a government as good as the people it serves". .

The second "Real Security": protect Americans at home & lead the world by telling the truth to our troops, our citizens, and our allies."

Those two are vague but on the right track at least.

IRAQ/FOREIGN POLICY is an unspoken elephant in the living room that I suppose is hidden inside the first two goals. I notice the signup sheet provided by King County DOES add another goal: "A plan for Iraq". Vague, but at least it's acknowledged as an issue.

The rest are the perennial election season promises: Economic prosperity, Educational excellence, Healthcare, Retirement security...

For instance: "Educational excellence," a goal announced by all parties; it means anything they want it to mean. Republicans use this phrase to justify "No Child Left Behind," vouchers to private schools, opposition to affirmative action, etc.

As we suffer a consitutional crisis, warmongering leadership, cronyism, creeping theocracy, loss of civil liberties, and staggering incompetence, we hear the chirpy Dem motto:

"Together, America can do Better."

Who wrote this, John Kerry? It ranks right up there with "Soup is Good Food" as a slogan...

Someone at the 34th caucus had propsed a new slogan: " Give America Back to the People". I'm not sure it ever was that way, but since we are now headed in the opposite direction, at least it makes a statement.

The little "Note" in a faux-handwriting font on the doorhanger is lame too:

"Dear Neighbor,
Like you, I know that working together, America can do better. It's time for a change. I hope we can chat soon about how Democrats are fighting for our values and priorities. Contact me at..."

I'm going to paste a sticker on top of this with my own message.

< "Logic and Accuracy Testing" = "Partial Birth Abortion" = "Assault | John McCain: The ends justifies the means >

Poll

Is the doorhanger lame?
No, it's brilliant
It looks okay to me
Could use some work, but it's too late
A graphic design firm got paid $5K to createTHIS?
Sorta lame
I'm embarrassed to use it

I am laughing at your analysis cuz it is great, AND

My post surgery guts are taking a beating !  Your comments are great.

I've got a really warped sense of humor - I'd rather laugh at something that is depressing cuz crying sucks.

What I've been scratching my head about is:

how does having my neighbors sign up with the DNC help US organize for the local stop light, the local bus routes, the local transportation system, the local anything?

IF it isn't easier to get together for whatever the local problems and concerns are, how does htat foster community involvement for the BIG fights?

OH well. It is a start on rebuilding a functioning system out of a completely dysfunctional system that has had the support of decades of neglect from the National and State party pooh-bahs.

Realistically, at least Howard is doing way more for peon involvment than McIncompent ever did during his Reign of Failure, 2000 - 2004.

Finally - Dina's comments REALLY show how important and how useful it is to have diversity of perspective and experience.

I love spreadsheets and databases and don't care in the least about colors and fonts,

I hate reading paragraphs of technical info - make bullet points and if / then statements, or don't bother me.

=> I didn't pick up on any of her valid points cuz it isn't my skill set, it is off my radar, but that doesn't mean her points are unimportant --  her points are VALID.

thanks thanks thanks.

We didn't get any yesterday in the 47th LD. Like the 47th LD slim jims (which we got a few of, not enough), there weren't enough to go around.

The 47th LD ones looked good, easy to read, and so forth. Too bad some of the money we're supposed to spend so much time trying to raise (I confess, I don't do that) wasn't kicked to the 47th to increase their print run...

attacks.

Dina's message analysis is great.

buried in all those colors and fonts is, supposedly, message.

quick history lesson -

sucky message = losey election.

Her comments make me start to think -

WHO are the people that did this thing?

Seriously, what makes them tick? what do they think is important and dumb? what have they done before they made this thing?

And, for all of you who need paragraphs of dense analysis and lots of "facts" - well, here are my facts.

This doorknob thing is at best the work of committee, and at worst the work of a few.

Regardless of it being the work of many or of a few, it reflects a almost complete lack of knowledge of Lakoff, and how RayGun and BushI and BushII won,

=> it reflects the work of people who are borderline or who are completely politically imcompetent.

I know in the blog-o-sphere what I've just done gets classified by many as an ad hominem attack -

I see it as a brief statement of facts.

Isn't diversity of opinion great ;)

Wrong! If anyone is tempted to challenge Dina with "let's see you do better," I am here to tell you that she can, and she will.

And when she does design that better doorhanger, Dina knows full well that I will put my money where my mouth is and help her produce them.

If perception is reality, then the world must be flat and the sun must revolve around it.

You are inspiring PCOs. Truly.

And not only is Fred going to doorbell his precinct in the 36th, he's going to doorbell one in the 47th.

Why doesn't the State Party have a "PCO of the Year" award? Or maybe the King County Dems should do that? I think I'll mention it to Jason and Shanna S.

In any case, I can think of two nominees for this prospective award.

Dinzina I am so in agreement -- that's one of our biggest problems now that people are acting as if it's business as usual --- and so there's this paralysis of action.

People are taking clues from all around them that things are ok.  The idea behind Social Proof is that people take their cues from those around them and, even in dire emergency, may not take action if others don't seem to get it that there's an emergency.

Pluralistic ignorance is when a number of people fail to speak their beliefs -- their shared beliefs -- because they think they are only ones who hold them.

So atrocities to be committed right in front of a whole nation and there's very little outrage.  And the Dems add to it with a doorhanger that gives almost no clue that we are in a dire situation.  It's the wrong path they've taken, IMHO

I blame the DLC for the ugly door-hangers.
