"Logic and Accuracy Testing" = "Partial Birth Abortion" = "Assault

Weapons"

All of these expressions have something in common, which is that they were invented out of whole cloth by people with zero relevant professional expertise for the sole purpose of obfuscating public discussion of the underlying issues.

"Partial birth abortion" is a term originally applied to a procedure known by real medical people as "intact dilation and extraction," and subsequently conflated with just about any procedure that might be performed after the first trimester of pregnancy. The resulting confusion was of course 100% on purpose.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intact_dilation_and_extraction

"Assault weapon" as the term is used today, mainly is based on whether or not a weapon looks scary instead of on any functional difference. However you want to regulate guns, it is seriously stupid to do so on the basis of their appearance instead of their functionality.

http://www.saf.org/default.asp?p=gunrights_faq#21

My intention here is not to derail discussion about election reform into arguing about abortion or gun control, but to point out that reproductive rights advocates and 2nd Amendment advocates are fully aware of the obfuscatory nature of the terminology used in public debate about their respective causes, and take every opportunity they can to introduce technical precision back into the discussion.

We in the election transparency movement need to follow their examples with the use of the term "logic and accuracy testing."  John Washburn discussed this extensively at the Save Our Elections forum in Portland last fall. ( http://www.summit.oregonvrc.org/ --I'm
reconstructing from my notes; any corrective input from real computer professionals is welcome.) "Logic and accuracy testing" is term made up by voting machine vendors to bamboozle people who have no professional knowledge of programming or computer security. Real software quality testers have used the term "functional testing" for this kind of testing for the last fifty years. Functional testing is basically testing which answers the question "Does the software provide the functionality required by the software specifications?"

Functional testing is in no way shape or form the same as security testing, which is not done for voting machines, or even required for their certification. Washburn says that he has never known anyone in an elections department who has the professional expertise necessary to conduct full functional testing, and he points out that even if functional testing of voting machines was of the highest caliber, it still could not discover the presence of any software which is time-triggered or event-triggered. You'd have to inspect the source code and the compilation process for that, and vendors won't let members of the public do that on the grounds of trade secrecy.

Why is this important? Because of the cheerful confidence that so many completely well-intentioned elections department people and members of the general public have in so called "logic and accuracy testing"! The fundamental basis of their trust is a pile of steaming bullshit, and we have to start pointing that out on every occasion possible. Just as Planned Parenthood and NARAL put the expression "partial birth abortion" in quotation marks, and call out people who use it every chance they get, so must we treat the expression "logic and accuracy testing."

for your general discussion of the deceptive use of language in political speech. And thank you for highlighting how voting machine vendors use the term "logic and accuracy testing" to deceive "well-intentioned elections department people."

You make a good point with regards to the manipulation of language to paint a picture that is so far removed from its content (speaking of butchering the language, it appears I could use some refresher courses).

Especially with "logic and accuracy" testing, I have to wonder what good logic is when the goal is clearly to confuse and mislead.

The blind trust of well-meaning elections department officials and the general public leaves them absolutely and totally susceptible to being hoodwinked and led over a cliff...it's the "see no evil, hear no evil" syndrome I've noticed is very widespread in our society now.

To this day, I am flabbergasted that people would actually listen to these moronic talking heads in the media who parrot the reasoning of oil industry executives to excuse the insane level of current gasoline prices, but they do, and they buy this bullshit that "market dynamics" is responsible...or more incredibly, the recent suggestion that Canada is to blame (gee, how long has Canada been north of us, just across the border, but gas prices have only in the last few Bush years exploded?).

I do take some issue with your reference to "assault weapons" however.  Those of us in the "gun confiscation" movement, who really give a damn, such as those of us in Washington CeaseFire, do know damned well the difference between functionality and appearance.  And when we speak of assault weapons, we speak of weapons that have been designed, or altered, to function in a manner that is out of proportion to the concept of "hunting", "target shooting", or "collecting of unique and antique guns".

I frankly don't give a fuck what you call the damned thing, if it is designed to spew large volumes and numbers of deadly projectiles at the touch of a button, or soon I am sure, at simply the slightest breath, then it no longer is a pistol, a hunting rifle, or an item in a valuable collection....it is a tool of mass murder, a "weapon of mass destruction" if you will.  As such, every moron and his dog should not have access to it.  That being said, I could care less if it looks like a frisbee.  Assault weapon?  That term means nothing to most of us.  Violence at the other end of any firearm is not pretty, it is not "well-intentioned", and trying to play games with language, in any direction or on any side of the issue does not make a damned bit of difference.  Violence is violence, and deliberately delivered tragedy is murder, it is not "the cost of living in a free society".

I've heard Paul Miller talk about election system certification and logic and accuracy testing as if it meant something substantial.  It is scary to realize that some people will believe him.  "Don't worry, everything will be alright! Just trust us!"  We need the election officials to set up the elections in such a way that WE and not THEY or even  more likely THE ELECTION SYSTEM VENDORS determine the results of the elections.

Elections should not be made so complicated as they are uncomprehensible.
