Cantwell posts on local blog

As much as I avoid linking to or mentioning them because of their relentless self-promotion (yes, that was catty - tough), I have to give props to NPI - they scored the first blog from Senator Maria Cantwell!  Stop by and drop a kudos on her for stepping up to the blogosphere.

The good news is that she's voting against the fraudulent "minimum wage hike" trifecta that the GOP pretended they wanted passed.  While this will be a fun bludgeon for the GOP morons to use in October (Dems voted against minimum wage hike! We love poor people, but they're mean!), the media's onto their bullshit this time and has called them on it.

For any of you feeling squishy because the GOP might "use this against us" - they don't have the juice for it to work and Americans have, quite frankly, stopped listening to Republicans.  We're going to take the House this year, possibly the Senate, and by February we'll pass the minimum wage increase without any nonsense attached.  Kudos to Senator Cantwell for her vote, and her post at NPI.

...a United States Senator.

I am certainly one who has made a point of being harshly critical of Senator Cantwell. But if the Senator actually blogged here, I would consider it unpardonable to use that occasion to try and upstage her. I've seen that happen on Kos and it's ridiculous.

Hyperbole is good fun and good for politics in one setting, but when serious people have an opportunity to share opinions with elected officials you have to be respectful of the entire group's desire to engage in productive conversation.

Obviously politicians favor friendly media outlets, but Maria Cantwell would do very well to come to washblog herself or send a representative. I know from personal experience that the people here would have a lot to offer her.

That was my feedback to the campaign.  NPI really isn't a blog of the people like Washblog is, and the comments threads there are mostly barren.

Maybe next time.

As one of "them", I think I'll weigh in...

Personally, I think you're exaggerating. I won't deny we promote ourselves (who doesn't?) but I disagree that it's "relentless."  We're actually a pretty humble group. We work hard and don't think we're better than anybody else. I think we're just eager to see people take advantage of the resources we've spent many, many hours putting together.

And we love feedback...we actually have a form on Pacific Northwest Portal's main page right now asking for your suggestions for improvement.

The Carpetbagger Report via Crooks and Liars
[excerpt]
Last night featured all of the predictable rhetoric and arguments, but my nominee for the dumbest comment of the debate comes by way of Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas): "[W]e are turning our back on the middle-class and poor people in this country who depend on the minimum wage and death-tax relief."

First, if Hutchison and the rest of the GOP are worried about low-income workers who need a minimum-wage increase, they can join Dems and support a free-standing bill. Second, if Hutchison can find a single poor person who depends on "death-tax relief," I'll campaign on her behalf.

As for the political implications, Republicans are feeling pretty good about themselves.

"I believe Americans will remember that Republicans worked hard to reach a true compromise here that would raise the standard of living for all American families," Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) said. "I think they will remember that after years of rhetoric, Democrats proved they were all talk and no action."

Maybe, but I don't think so. Republicans control every branch of government and were given an option to pass a long-overdue increase in the minimum wage. They instead chose to play a cynical game.

The GOP plan is to hope voters aren't paying any attention. They'll say, "We tried to boost the minimum wage, but the mean ol' Dems wouldn't let us." To put it mildly, this is a long-shot.

Kudos to the Dems for taking an unyielding stance against the GOP's nonsense. A special thanks to Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), who did the right thing despite some very aggressive targeting by the Republican leadership. She could have folded and told the Dems it wouldn't have affected the outcome, but instead, Cantwell stood her ground and rejecting a bad bill.

Right up front - I was the second comment (thanking her for her vote) over at NPI. I wanted to be first but while I was previewing my comment, someone "posted" ahead of me.

Now the question in my mind is this, since there is no mechanism for posting comments on Senator Cantwell's own "Blog", will there ever be a response to the post and comments over at NPI? In other words, will Maria actually make an effort at 2-way communications?

Just asking.....
