Polling Inslee on Impeachment

[Front paged: NM]

The recent revelation in an NIE report that Iran had shelved its nuclear weapons program as long ago as 2003 has added fuel to the fires of impeachment.

According to Sy Hersh this report has been "in circulation" for almost as long as Bush and Cheney have been lying to us about Iran's non-existent weapons program.  Hersh believes that Cheney kept "his foot on the neck" of the report bottled up because he didn't "like" the conclusions it reached.

We've been here before. Sexed up intelligence, stove piped intelligence along with feverish images of Middle Eastern madmen wielding nuclear weapons are what shoved a reluctant nation into an unnecessary and disastrous war in Iraq. Then as now, all roads lead to the door of the Vice President's office.

The national outrage has been pushed to the breaking point.

Last week Rep. Grijalva of Arizona become the 23rd co-sponsor of Rep. Kucinich's HR 333, Articles of Impeachment against Dick Cheney.

Rep. Wexler, the House of Representatives super-sleuth, polled his Florida constituents and found 61% in favor of impeaching Cheney. Wexler is recommending to Nancy Pelosi and the House Judiciary Committee that hearings regarding the charges against Cheney go forward.

At the other end of the spectrum, we have Jay Inslee (D-WA) who went back to DC this fall with his ears burning. His constituents made it uncomfortably clear that impeachment was on their table. All but one of the Legislative Districts he represents have passed independent impeachment resolutions.

Inslee not only refuses to respond to his constituent's demands but has actively worked to capsize grassroots efforts to kick start impeachment from the State Legislature.

Rep. Wexler is a man with a good understanding of just what his job entails. He is the people's representative in Congress. He asks for their input and implements it. He's not their parent and they are not his children. He is a public servant not their superior.

Inslee operates by a different sort of logic. At a town meeting this fall he told us he believes his judgment trumps his constituents' desires. That fact that his constituents are less likely to have their judgment clouded by personal ambition, party politics or the siren song of "K" Street didn't seem to interest him. That his judgment and his oath of office are conflict didn't trouble him.

He fills his days pushing an energy agenda that cannot pass because he is shielding the obstacles to its passage: Bush and Cheney. He talks about domestic violence, a Japanese Memorial on Bainbridge Island, (his home) and bout holding our "soldiers close to our hearts" while he votes to fund an illegal occupation that keeps them in the Middle East.

Inslee seems content to ignore the elephant in the room; that our government is illegitimate in the minds of its citizens and in the eyes of the law.

Does Inslee think that in some distant day his constituents are going to thank him for "exercising his judgment" in allowing a dishonest men to abuse our military and suck up the collective wealth of our nation?

Does he think that we are grateful that exercising his judgment has allowed our civil rights to be ripped out of the Constitution and that the Body he sits in believes thought should become criminalized?

Does he think that we are pleased that his judgment forces our grandchildren to pay off a debt that lined the pockets of war profiteers and enabled our military to commit war crimes?

Granted there are other members of Congress equally guilty. But I didn't vote for them. I did vote for Inslee thinking he would represent me fairly and honestly.. He is my voice in Congress and I'm tired of having my interests subordinated to his "judgment".

PS If you are as disgusted as I am, give "Washington for Impeachment" a shout. Help them hold our representatives feet to the fire and educate other Americans about our rights.

I've long wondered about Inslee. He talks the talk, but there is something about holding office in that body that turns most of 'em into pod people who have more pressing priorities than representing their constituents, protecting the Constitution, or holding other officeholders accountable - by actions, not blather.

I'm glad my Rep, Jim McDermott, has signed onto the Impeachment Resolution. A heavy load was lifted from my mind when he did that. Well, one 500th of a heavy load, anyway.

If we have any hope for peace, democracy, and the rule of law, we must insist upon impeachment of Cheney & Bush for launching a war of aggression and numerous violations of the Constitution. We must hold every Senator's feet to the fire for conviction and filibuster of any appointment of a replacement VP. Then, we must demand two things of President Pelosi:

  1. A Truth & Reconciliation Commission on Complicity in War Profiteering; and

  2. Absolute guarantee of free and fair elections with international observers.

If we can't accomplish that, we'd better spend every ounce of energy building a strong, mutually supportive local community that can sustain through the shit storm that's coming down!

I hold here in my hand a three-page letter, on Congress of the United States House of Representatives authored by Jay Inslee.

I quote from the first page (I do it without permission, but I don't think he'd mind):

As you know, H.Res. 333, the resolution to impeach Richard B. Cheney, Vice President of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors has been introduced in the House of Representatives and is now being considered in the House Judiciary Committee. Under this resolution, the Vice President stands accused of manipulating intelligence regarding Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and openly threatening aggression against Iran.

You will be pleased to know that I voted against the motion to table the bill. The bill was subsequently referred to the House Judiciary Committee where Chairman Conyers (D-MI) now may choose to consider this issue in his committee, the same path through which all previous impeachment inquiries have followed. (emphasis mine)

In the past, I have strongly opposed this administration's incompetent and damaging policies. I voted against the authorization for this president to invade Iraq, even though the measure at the time was popular. Since that vote, I have stood up to President Bush on every turn during his misguided adventure in Iraq. While I am njot a member of the House Judiciary Commkittee, please rest assured I will continue to be vigilant in the protection of our civil liberties and constitutional rights.

This is not the entirety of the first page. Then he goes on what I would characterize as a page-and-a-half tear against Gonzales. The personal aspect of this is probably reflected in the following on page 3:

As an attorney and former prosecutor and now as a member of the US Congress, I take the responsibility of defending the US Constitution in this nation very seriously. The American public must have faith in the justice system...

I suggest to you that maybe this background colors is perception of his role in these proceedings. Therefore:

Are you one of his constituents (I'm not, even. He sent me two copies of this letter, I stapled one to the telephone pole outside my house.); and if so and thereby demonstrating some additional standing, have you directed interrogatory to him asking, specifically, what he would need, as a prosecutor and so forth, to not only concur that the investigation should continue but that he would himself recommend the indictment by signing on to the articles? What does he need? Have you asked him? (Don't importune him if you don't have standing.)
