Karl Rove Protest!

Karl Rove, the quasi-human being we love to hate, within smelling distance of our beautiful city!

Left, our friend Cherisse displaying a strong statement, conceived by my own perverse imagination. Chair of King County Democrats Susan Sheary is in the background.

It seems even Washington Republicans might prefer to avoid Karl's pungent aroma, but no; they invited the Shameless One as their Keynote Speaker. Protestors arrived at the Sea-Tac Hilton to make our objections known.

Gathered at the ugly hotel as guests arrived were the "Not in Our Name" crowd, AM 1090 with a giant banner, the Vashon Island Chain Gang, several Vets for Peace, and many familiar Democratic activists and bloggers.

Above, me with my own statement. I could've added "Not a compliment, Karl!"

Above, another Washblog friend (eridani, I believe?)

A foreign taxi driver pulled over momentarily to call out to us: "You do good thing! Thank you!"

Spelling may be off, but sentiment is well expressed.

A reporter for King 5 was directed to June, this 87-year-old protestor, and I did see her on the news making a statement about holding the Bush administration accountable.

I made a statement to the same reporter, who said he wanted to talk to us before he went inside to cover the VIP event. But as far as I know, my statement wasn't aired.

I had thought about what I'd say if asked  why I was out there. I said: "Karl Rove has been enabling government corruption for decades, and he's proud of it. The Washington Republicans chose to honor such a man as their keynote speaker. That's well worth protesting."

Maybe that was too long, or maybe I looked too partisan, with my "Impeach Bush and Cheney" and "Vote Democrat" buttons. Or maybe sunglasses don't look good on camera - who knows? I glimpsed myself ever-so-briefly on the video clip, but I don't think the sign was readable.

On the same report, I saw the ever-smirking Rove speaking to his base. Apparently he had two important warning messages:

1. Iraq: We must keep fighting the terrorists over there so we don't have to fight them over here, where they will destroy everything we hold dear.

No, really - that 2002-era message is still being polished and presented with a straight face, apparently.

2. Taxes! Taxes! Democrats will raise your taxes.
EVEN AFTER YOU'RE DEAD!

Republicans understand the U.S. must wage war endlessly, but they need never pay for it with tax money...

coming off the word corruption say it all.  What's wrong with Republicans -- choosing to be represented by this sociopath?

Local blogger "Seattle Jew" states that, even though he purchased a ticket and asked ahead of time if he could bring a camera inside and was told it was OK, when he showed up with his camera he was sent packing.  Read his post here.

"byrond" has a post on Sound Politics with a link to his own blog, My Own Side, where he mentions Seattle Jew and one other person were ejected.

On the other hand, it appears that Patrick of Respectfully Republican was allowed to take photos inside.

were mentioned among the signs above.
One: "Un-American Machiavelli"
Two: "American Himmler" below.

I'm wondering if the average person knows who are Machiavelli and Himmler. Clever, but shouldn't the signs be dumbed down so anyone could get it? I mean, lots of people don't even know who Rove is. I encountered one passerby who didn't. He seemed curious about the protest but mystified, so I explained who Rove was.

Wouldn't the parallel of the Nazi era be Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda minister, rather than Himmler, head of the Gestapo?

Read the Wiki entry on Goebbels--the similarities are very disturbing...

TVW has film footage of Rove's speech to his cult followers.  I have not seen it but a friend watched and relayed a comment by Rove wherein he used an odd choice of words to describe the GOP loss in the 2006 election.  He was commenting on that fact that the GOP would have retained control of Congress if only they had won 3000 more votes, only he did not use the word "won." Instead, he said the GOP would have retained control control if only they had "shifted" 3000 more votes. (sorry I don't have the URL).
