Postal Service plans to contract out letter carrier jobs!

The Postal Service is quietly unveiling plans to contract out letter carrier jobs, which scares the hell out of this letter carrier, because of what it could mean for the safety and the security of the US Mail.

Some of you may remember me as the guy who started Postal Workers United Against Tyranny.

I created that organization to counteract the proposed plans by the President to authorize warantless searches of people's mail.  I managed to get resolutions passed in the Pierce County Central Labor Council, as well as in my union and the State Association of Letter Carriers, opposing this practice.

Now the Postal Board of Governors wants to contract out our jobs to the lowest bidder.  This will effectively strip away good middle-class opportunities from veterans as well as other new workers, looking to be a part of the Federal government.  I've got nothing against independent contractors, but the way this system is planned, it's anything but smart.  It will lead to a drastic plunge in the consistency and quality of service, not to mention putting the safety and security of mail in major jeopardy.

I would urge you all to read my post on the Tahoma Activist about this, and if you're a postal worker or you care about the fate of the Postal Service, to come on by Postal Workers United Against Tyranny and help us stop this proposed insanity.

Senator Tom Harkin has introduced a bill in the Senate that would effectively block all further privatization.  Please call his office and let him know you appreciate this action, as well as calling your member of Congress and Senators to get them to sign on.  In the Senate, it's Senate Bill 1457, and in the House it's H.R. 282.  If enough of us get active, we can stop this terrible plan from going any further.

Thanks so much for all you do, and keep up the good work!

I also think it's an economic issue.  Changing to lowest-bidder will decrease wages/benefits for carriers.  Just another form of out-sourcing and a way to squeeze more of us out of the middle-class.

Just in time for force mail voting! I'm reminded that when I last got a government yob, the security check was outsourced and done so meathandedly that one of my former employers contacted me in case some overseas talent might be trying to steal my identity. Nice. I'm glad there's actually still somebody who's a good 'merkun citizen who's in charge of all of this outsourcing. Hope they check their back account... hourly...
