Democrats Keith Scully and Bill Sherman in Race for King County Prosecutor [UPDATE]

[Update, 6/8/07. The title on this post was changed from Keith Sully will File to Run for King County Prosecutor and the information on Bill Sherman was added. Comments through 6/7/07 reflect that earlier version. Update: 6/7/07: Bob Ferguson has announced he won't run. Here's the Seattle Times article.]
Democrat Bill Sherman has announed that he will formally file today (6/8/07) to run for King County Prosecutor. The email I received with his resume (see below the fold) included a note: "...(h)e is an exceptional candidate with an impressive resume. He is a bright, dedicated and experienced front-line prosecutor, a fundamentally decent person and a well-grounded family man who shares the core values of the people of King County." Keith Scully, Legal Director for Futurewise and former Deputy Prosecutor in Maleng's office (1999-2005), has announced that he will file to run on the Democratic ticket (update 6/7/07) for the position of King County Prosecutor tomorrow (6/6/07).

See below for the press release.

Personal:

He is married with two children, and lives in Seattle's Ravenna neighborhood.

Keith Scully will file to run for King County Prosecutor Wednesday.

Scully said he is entering the race because he wants to prosecute crime responsibly and make King County the nation's leader in environmental protection.

"The Prosecutor's Office is our first line of defense against crime. Aggressive prosecution is important, but so is fairness."

Scully's filing brings a fresh face to the race to replace long-time prosecutor Norm Maleng, who died unexpectedly last month. Those in the legal community know Scully for his six years as a deputy prosecutor in Maleng's office, as well as for his work as a war crimes prosecutor in The Hague .

Scully took a post with the United Nations in 2005. In the international criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia , Scully was part of the team that prosecuted the president of Serbia for atrocities committed in Kosovo.

"Working for the United Nations gave me a fresh perspective on prosecution," Scully said. "I brought back a lot of ideas for making the prosecutor's office better, especially ways of providing more support for victims during the prosecution process."

Scully brings a wide range of legal and life experience to the race.

"Norm Maleng always said that you should do something with your life before running for office," Scully remembered. "I've done that--as one of his deputies, as a war crimes prosecutor for the United Nations, and before that as a paramedic in Jersey City and Newark, New Jersey."

In addition to aggressively prosecuting violent crime, Scully's priorities are to expand the fraud division, and create an environmental protection unit focused on enforcing the laws to protect the environment, especially the Puget Sound .

Scully currently works as the legal director for the environmental nonprofit group Futurewise. He is known as a creative attorney who uses the law to achieve  environmental goals.

Attorney Robert Flennaugh II, who is a criminal defense lawyer in King County , said, "I remember cases with Keith well. He wasn't afraid to take tough cases to trial, and always sought a fair resolution."

Scully graduated from New York University School of Law. He lives in Greenlake with his wife, Jennifer, daughter Katie, and son Finnegan.

Is he filing as a Republican or a Democrat?

Funny how that's omitted from the release.

Ferguson wants to move up so badly that he is salivating at the prospect of being the next KC Prosecuting Atty. However, Ferguson has proven time and again that his number one priority is himself. Ferguson cares about Ferguson. Ferguson couldn't care less about the policies he promotes on the KC Council unless it get's his name in the paper. More to the point on this race, Ferguson couldn't care less about the attorney's in the Prosecutor's Office. That is why most people don't trust him. If he doesn't file for the office, he will make excuses about how "he talked it over with his family and decided that it wasn't the right time." Oh my God, how noble. Bob wants to file. The only reason he won't is if it is too risky for his precious political career.

  1. As the one who started the thing about Scully's party identification, I wasn't "insinuating" anything.  I'd never heard of the guy, and therefore had no idea what his party affiliation was.  Sure, I could have assumed it based on his credentials and interests, but if you always did that sort of thing you'd probably be wrong about, say, Fred Jarrett or Tim Sheldon.
  2. I feel better about my unfamiliarity with Scully when Ivan says the same thing.  I though he knew everybody.
  3. I do know Bill Sherman, and I'm really thrilled to see his hat in the ring.  I wrote in his name in the County Prosecutor race last year (twice ... in the primary and the general), and now I'll have the opportunity to cast a vote for him without writing it in.
  4. It'll be interesting to see whether any other Democrats file by this afternoon.  There was a whisper about Mark Sidran last week, but I haven't heard a single peep about him since then.
  5. On the other side, it does look like the GOP have put all of their (rotten) eggs in Satterberg's basket.  FWIW.

I went to the 36th District's fundraiser on Saturday, something of a "progressive dinner" -- there were snacks and light dinner at several homes in the LD, after which all participants went to Larry Phillips's home for desserts.

Lots and lots of candidates to be seen, especially at Larry's.  Off the top of my head, I recall Scott Noble (a bit peeved at the clever GOP trick against him), Thom McCann, Gael Tarleton, Jack Block, Alec Fisken, Bruce Harrell, John Manning, Tim Burgess, David Della, Peter Maier, and Sherry Carr.  I'm told that Bill Sherman decided to do the family-thing for his birthday, which explains his absence.

Keith Scully, though, was there.  In fact, he attended my sister's pre-dessert event (as did Harrell), so I had the opportunity for significant interaction with him.  And I'm glad I did.

Let me tell you, we're going to have an interesting endorsement meeting in the 43rd!  Scully and Sherman are both superb candidates.  They are, it seems, peas in a pod -- both live in the 43rd, both experienced prosecutors (they probably overlapped for a while in the Prosecutors' office), both experienced beyond the local/regional level (Scully with the UN Kosovo prosecutions, Sherman with Babbitt's EPA), both strong environmentalists.  The similarities go right down to their number of children (two).

Simply put, whichever of the two prevails in the primary, we will have a superlative Democratic candidate for the November general election.
