"Progressive Voter's Guide" is not for real

The Progressive Party of Washington trademarked its name some time ago because of the over-use of our name for groups we cannot agree with, or who just want a cool name for their group and figure, "why not?"

Imagine my surprise when I opened my email box to find an email from Fuse http://www.fusewashington.org/, touting its new, "Progressive Voter's Guide." I checked it out. It is not a match for the Progressive Party's endorsement. As a matter of fact, they endorsed in several races we did not, and they endorsed Sam Reed!!!!!!!!! We feel that he is a bad Secretary of State, and we recommended Jason Osgood.

We do not want anyone to confuse our endorsements with theirs.

So, I called their office, and asked if they would put in a disclaimer on their web page. I got the usual excuse that the word Progressive is in general usage, and that they could use it on a voter's guide. I asked if they would use, "Democratic Voter's Guide". They said no, that that was different.

How is it different? The Democratic Party has more money and would sue them faster? If you want to see the real Progressive Party endorsements goto:

Here is the text of their endorsement of Sam Reed:

Sam Reed has earned your vote. He has taken voter registration online. He has professionalized the elections system and he has made the office easier for Washington businesses to navigate.

What pray tell are businesses doing navigating the Secretary of State's office?

Isn't there a magazine called 'The Progressive'.  Maybe they would have the clout to claim copyright infringement.

If someone came up with something called a "Democrats Voters Guide" or even "Democratic Voters Guide", that would be fine.  "Democrat" is a word in general usage just like "Progressive".

What they can't do, and didn't do, is to call their guide "The Progressive Party Voters Guide", which you would have sued over.  And unless it is coming from an official organization under the Democratic Party Charter, someone else can't print something claiming to be "The Democratic Party Voters Guide" without threat of a suit.

Progressive and Democrat are words.  The Progressive Party and the Democratic Party are recognized organizations with rights under the law.  Just like the "Washington State Progressive Caucus" is an organization, as is "Democracy for Washington" and "Progressive Majority".  When we start demanding that specific words are forbidden based on their usage in the name of an organization somewhere, we're the ones going too far.

You're doing the right thing by standing up and declaring a difference between what you say and what they say, especially with the endorsement for Sam.  Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
