WA-Suspended Dentist Practicing Poshly in Palm Springs?

Here's a little something for the anti-regulation folks down in Southern California: a copy of an email I just sent to the Dental Board of California.

Dear Dental Board of California,

In doing research for a story, I found a person I believe to be a California practitioner who has had some 32 filed complaints in Washington state and his license suspended 5 times, it seems, although it seems the suspensions were stayed.

His name is Alireza "Allen"' Yekta Nazeri, WA license # DE00006673.

Notice of his final suspension was published here: http://www.doh.wa.gov/Publicat/2005_news/05-057.htm

.PDF files of the adjudicated cases, including complaints and final orders are to be found here:

https://fortress.wa.gov/doh/providercredentialsearch/ProviderDetail_1.aspx?CredentialIdnt=142152

His name also appeared in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's database of dentists with complaints against them (compiled as part of a large story), Dr. Nazeri's name to be found here:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/specials/dentists/db.asp?searchtype=disciplined

and here:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/specials/dentists/db.asp?searchtype=complaint&name=NAZERI%2C+ALIRE ZA+Y&dob=3/11/1966

Hope this helps.

Dave Bailey,

Seattle, Washington

I called Dr. Nazeri in Palm Springs where he practices "concierge" dentistry from a luxuriously-appointed office. He would only say that there was a "settlement" here in Washington and directed further inquiries to his attorney. Some will remember a quite-shocking expose in the Seattle P-I about lax standards for dentists here in Washington state. One thing Washington state is doing very right is making information public and accessible. But that doesn't mean it gets shared among agencies.

I stumbled upon this in the way one stumbles upon things on the Internet. Before today, I didn't know anything about Nazeri, I don't know any of his patients, I have no malice nor any conceivable reason for malice against him. I am simply a citizen conveying information from one regulatory agency to another.

It will be embarrassing, however, for the CBS 2 TV news station in Palm Springs, who used the good doctor and his practice as an on-camera news source. Nazeri sports the video on his website in the "in the media" section.

Anti-regulation, anti-tax conservatism "cut its teeth" in Southern California with the "Reagan revolution". And now it is having its teeth cut.

I received this prompt response from the Dental Board of California:

Effective 6/25/04, Alireza Yekta Nazeri, CA license #39454, was placed on 5 years probation based upon discipline taken by the State of Washington.  In addition to usual and customary terms, Dr. Nazeri's probation Order requires remedial education related to the cause for discipline in Washington, and he was required to undergo psychiatric evaluation.  Dr. Nazeri is in compliance with the terms of his probation.

And then I found this on the Washington State Department of Health website:

<u>State disciplines health care providers</u>

........................

Out of State

California: In August 2007 the Dental Commission charged dentist Alireza Y. Nazeri (DE00006673) with unprofessional conduct. He allegedly violated the standard of care during various treatments.

Much credit, I think, goes to Washington state for at least making things public. Public information is, I think, the very bedrock of establishing good regulation. It's not free, but these days it's cheap and it's always the honest thing to do.

I'm not sure it's a substitute for more hands-on regulation, but I'll leave that to the professionals and the public.

Dr. Alireza "Allen" Yekta Nazeri finally had his license suspended indefinitely after a hearing substantiated even more instances of substandard dentistry and Dr. Nazeri stipulated putting, in effect, fee income above patient care as he expanded his practice radically.

The Dental Quality Assurance people were nice thoughtful enough to send me an email alerting me to the new public record in response to my oddball interest in this case.

In response to news of the indefinite suspension in Washington state, the California Dental Board said only that they had answered my previous email - which I knew, actually. The healthcare consumers of California don't give a toss whether they answer my email and neither do I. I just hope they have their eye on the ball.

Meanwhile Dr. Nazeri is offering seminars (warning - .PDF) on "Secrets Behind Your Patients Saying "YES"..." including "the scripts necessary to close your next big case."

"Scripts" mind you. Not improved medical advice but "scripts".
