Unprecedented: National Humane Society Legislative Fund Endorses Obama

I grew up in a Humane Society household. Both my liberal Democratic mom and conservative Republican dad worked on the cause throughout my childhood. I got a good understanding early on of the link between cruelty to animals and cruelty to other human beings. And I got a ground-view look at the fierceness and dedication that people who love animals often give to the cause.

The HSLF has never endorsed a presidential candidate. Its affiliate organization, the Humane Society of the US, is thought of as politically careful -- even as over-cautious by some. This is not an anti-hunting organization. It's an anti-cruelty organization. Its board of directors is composed of both Democrats and Republicans. This is a remarkable endorsement. First, because this organization can, and has, mobilized voters decisively. Second, the text of its email is remarkable. I had no idea how strongly Obama has supported anti-cruelty measures throughout his career -- nor how extreme Sarah Palin is in her actions and views.

This endorsement, coming on the heels of the Defenders of Wildlife ad, gives me hope. That ad was determined to result in moderate movement toward Obama among Democrats, Republicans, and Independents after viewing by Media Curves, Inc.
