Verify Your Voter Registration [Updated]

Having studied our statewide voter registration database, I have some concerns, which I'll detail below the fold. Meanwhile...

Verify Your Registation

Please take a moment to verify your voter registration. The deadline for new registrations is October 4th. While you're at it, encourage your friends, families and neighbors to do the same.

WashBlog has a banner ad with helpful links (in the left margin). Thanks Noemie! For all of Washington State, check online here. King County Elections has their own website. If you're not registered, or need to update your address, you can register online here.

[Update] Phone Numbers

I've received reports of intermittent problems with the web sites. If you have any problems whatsoever, please use the phone.

Voting Rights Concerns

The incumbent Republican Secretary of State has publicly taken credit for cancelling 400,000 voter registrations. He's being far too modest.

Between January 2006 and June 2008, the Republican has cancelled 900,000 voter registrations. For the same period, 500,000 new registrations have been added. That's a net loss of 400,000 voter registrations.

It's been very difficult to determine why all these voters have been cancelled. During our first debate, the incumbent brushes off criticism by saying these registrations were duplicates, people who've died, and felons. That accounts for 25% of the cancellations.

However, 75% of the cancellations have no explanation whatsoever. Not dead, not felons, not duplicate records.

I don't understand this. Washington State continues to grow. We're mounting record voter registration drives. And yet, we have fewer registered voters.

It seems to me the total number of voters should be going up, not down.

These cancellations may be legitimate. I just can't say, either way. In fact, no one can vouch for the VRDB. And that's the problem. The lack of oversight, the poor quality of the data, the reluctance to provide answers, etc. That is the problem.

Volunteer Opportunity

I have filed open records requests for the VRDB logs, among other things. Compelling our government to follow the law and provide this information is a full time job, requiring tenacity and effort.

I'd be very grateful if someone(s) stepped up and helped with this activity. Contact me via jason at jasonosgood.com.

Thank you!

Cheers, Jason Osgood

Here's an example of why it's crucial to check your status TODAY.

A politically active person contacted me. They had trouble verifying their registration. So I checked. The Sec of State lists this person as inactive. King County Elections doesn't even have a record.

Note: If you are marked as inactive, meaning someone somewhere thought maybe you moved, you will not receive a mail ballot.

Please check your voter registration today.

Unfortunately, the average citizen is unable to verify that the 900,000 cancellations are appropriate. As a citizen I want to be able to verify for myself.  I want a simple method for verifying that the cancellations are appropriate given the fact that Republicans in other parts of the country have been known to illegally remove voters from the voter rolls.  Right now, the average citizen has no way to verify the accuracy of the cancellations.  Although voter registration database updates are available to the public, it is necessary to have database software and knowledge of how to analyze databases. Most citizens are not in this position. Furthermore, the updates do not include the underlying data upon which one can verify that a cancellation is appropriate.  Once again, we are required to trust rather than verify.
