I hope you are sitting down for this. According to Reuters (
as reported on MSNBC),
"WASHINGTON - NBC News Monday branded the Iraq conflict a civil war -- a decision that put it at odds with the White House and that analysts said would increase public disillusionment with the U.S. troop presence there,"
What courage! What journalistic integrity! In the face of severe "tsking" from a Whitehouse used to getting its way with the media, NBC resorted to a dictionary.
"NBC said the Iraqi government's inability to stop spiraling violence between rival factions fit its definition of civil war."
The Whitehouse was quick to bring out the big guns on this. "National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said while the situation on the ground is serious, neither President Bush nor Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki believe it is a civil war." I'm sure Bush made the case that, as the Sunnis and Shiites both live in the middle of the country, it can't be a civil war. Everybody knows a civil war is North against South.
OK, excitement's over. Everybody back to C-Span
