Town Hall With Adam Smith

[Front paged: NM] Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman, 9th CD, Washington State, held a town hall yesterday on the campus of the University of Washington, Tacoma.

The focus was on "issues relating to veterans and the military."

The town hall was well-attended, although there were a few empty seats in Carwein Auditorium in the Keystone Building on the U Dub Tacoma campus.

Initial questions were raised by vets with problems resolving medical and status of injury issues. There were reps from both VA hospitals, as well as Smith staff persons who handle veterans' affairs to field these concerns.

The tone of the town hall was changed when a question was raised about war planning, a paraphrased version follows:

"In war planning and accounting for war costs, would it be possible to mandate planning for care of the wounded as an intrinsic part of war planning? Is there some way of preventing the re-occurrence of the mismanagement of the Iraqi invasion when Rumsfeld headed the Defense Department and failed to provide for our wounded vets?"

A lot of cheering ensued because of the slam against Rumsfeld. He is obviously not a very popular guy with vets.

Smith was startled in finally saying that he was wrong to grant Bush war powers. He extenuated himself by saying that he feared it would look "partisan" if he refused to trust the presidency of Bush and refused to extend these powers.

There were many in the audience who were not sympathetic to this view.

Smith went on to state the obvious, that the Iraqi adventure had been grossly mismanaged and that Democrats were doing their damndest to rein it in ... when a group from Federal Way Matters stood up in the back of the auditorium and displayed their T-shirts which spelled out the word "IMPEACH."

Smith reverted back immediately to his old game plan of, "Name me one impeachable item," and went on to say that the Bush administration had done nothing that was more heinous than preceding administrations.

The Federal Way Matters folks were not impressed with Smith's answers, needless to say, and discussion became quite spirited.

Smith did concede that the issue of Iraq held top priority, even though he has removed that issue as a topic when constituents e-mail him about their concerns. He has promised to see that the topic of Iraq is restored.

The issue of privatization of the war was raised. Like always, the town hall was too short to deal with all issues but perhaps Smith can be persuaded to have more town halls on the more controversial aspects of America's present situation.

And, be advised that the folks of Federal Way Matters hold an "Enough" demonstration every Sunday at the corner of 320th and Pac Highway in Federal Way between 12 and 1 PM. You are invited to stand with us.

And, hopefully, other persons who attended the town hall will offer up their version of the event.

excuse for committing young people lives to this 5 year war that appears to be never-ending.  I have been among a contingent of military families that has met in private meeting with Rep. Adam Smith in his Washington DC office in Sept 2005. He was an avid listener and agreed with much of our concerns, but he stopped short of agreeing to act to end the war sooner, which didn't do much to prevent the continued drain of life of our treasured young people in the military.

He did agree with my analogy (borrowed from the words of my husband) that the relationship triangle of Commander-in-Chief to military to citizens; military to citizens and Commander-in-Chief; citizens to military and Commander-in-Chief seems to be broken. Commander-in-Chief has obligation to the military and to the citizens of U.S. and when that obligation is being exploited, abused or misused, our military relies on citizen relationship to Commander-in-Chief and military to make course adjustments.  Military is meeting it's obligation to Commander-in-Chief and to citizens.  Seems it is the citizens and Commander-in-Chief who are failing our military and not honoring that relationship.

I'm not sure how regret serves well, since Rep. Smith is old enough to know the history of what damage wars can do.  Well maybe he can be less concerned about how he will appear with 'partisan' politics and vote what's right on the Iraq war funding, and when it comes time that the chips are down on invading Iran.

Thanks to the people in Federal Way for the weekly vigils.  Oh, and is it our job to explain to our politicians what the impeacheable offenses are or is their job to know and act??   I'm just saying...

One of my colleagues, a military wife, and Rep. Adam Smith is her LD Representative has visited personally with him many times to express her concerns.  He has long known the distress from those of us outspoken military families in Washington state who have expressed our concerns to him directly about our loved ones deployed in the invasion/occupation of Iraq.

On the Surge in Iraq "--we have set the bar so low it's buried in the sand at this point." - Barack Obama
