Early thoughts on the candidate filings

Friday afternoon was the deadline for candidates to file for office in the 2007 cycle.  I've written a first-blush review of some of the filings, Gleanings from the Candidate Filings page, over on my blog, Peace Tree Farm.  Take a gander, if you're interested.

Here in King County, in addition to the suddenly-exciting County Prosecutor race we have county-level races for Assessor and County Council.  The Port of Seattle Commissioner races also cover the county.

As a resident of Seattle, I'm also looking at City Council and School Board races.

To wrap up this quickie, I might mention that several of our lunatic-fringe pals have thrown their propeller-beanies into the ring once again.  Here are a few of them:

  • Goodspaceguy Nelson filed as a Democrat for County Council position 8.  Watch out, Dow Constantine.
  • Good old Stan Lippmann is looking for a rematch against Sally Clark, who trounced him last year for Seattle City Council position 9.
  • Everyone's favorite fringer, Richard Pope, filed for County Council position 6.  As a Democrat.  Let me repeat that -- Richard Pope is the only "Democrat" to file against Jane Hague.  How do Susie Sheary and Dwight Pelz explain that?

I hadn't heard that Darlene Flynn had filed to run again for Seattle School Board (District 2). That will be an interesting race. In May, the 36th E-board interviewed Lisa Stuebing, and she came off sounding--no offense to the 43rd--like a fruitcake. On June 25th, we'll interview Sherry Carr. I hope Darlene Flynn will sign up for an interview.

In May, we also interviewed Peter Maier and Sally Soriano (District 1 candidates). In my view, Peter Maier gave a solid interview, while Sally Soriano essentially blew it.

After the E-board completes its interviews and makes its recommendations, I'll be able to share details.

My understanding is that there was at least one good candidate ready to run against her, but then she threw her kick-off, and raised an obscene amount of money (something in the neighborhood of $100,000 - too lazy to check her PDCs right now), and that scared everybody off.

Trust me N - there was serious recruitment going on for that race, but Hague's fundraising was too much to overcome.  Gotta love how important money is in these races!

Not to put too fine a point on it, but you had your chance

Let me just say that I am ecstatic that we have two, yes that's right two, Democrats filed for Pullman City Council. Sure there are 4 positions open, but 2 is two more candidates than we had a week ago.

One of the main reasons we moved to California was because of the joke that the Seattle School District has become and especially the so-called school board. It has been a world of difference here with a schoold board and district that actually cares about students and not their future political aspirations.

Anybody running to replace any existing school board memb
