mudslide and lewis county

[ed] If this topic isn't worth more attention, none are. Weyco behaving badly and running for cover. AR

The human impact on Lewis County flooding was examined Thursday during testimony about logging practices and commercial development to the Senate Natural Resources, Ocean & Recreation Committee.

The hearing centered around last month's mudslides on Weyerhaeuser land near Pe Ell. Company officials contended clear-cut harvesting was much less a factor than the overnight storm in early December that their rain gauges measured to have dropped 14 inches during the tropical weather system's strongest 24 hours, 20 inches in all.

"In one area you'll see a slide and then you'll drive 10 miles and see very little damage," said Kevin Godbout, director of regulatory and external affairs for Weyerhaeuser, which owns more than 2 million acres of commercial forestland in the region. "That shows us that the driving mechanism there was the extreme weather."

weyerhauser is trying to blow smoke up peoples skirts if they think we are going to believe that the logging done around hwy 6 wasn't a factor in the slide.

the clearcutting is quite obvious around the hills of lewis county. its doing the same damage to the terrain as wildfires are doing in california: the timber acted as a buffer to stablize the soil. one removed, the soil has nothing to attatch itself to once the soil gets saturated with enourmous amounts of rainfall. then mudslides occur. there is a definate liability issue occuring here and i think that weyerhauser knows it and is backpeddling as much as possible.

Timber reps are full of shit.

Last time I heard some of them was during the NMFS public hearings about the D4 rules being considered to save wild salmon runs that were being added to the endangered species list. The idea is that society needs to have a plan.

EVERYONE who testified said the rules weren't enough. EXCEPT the timber reps, who claimed that REDUCING the buffer along streams (among other things) would better protect salmon habitat.

As far as I'm concerned Weyerhauser, Plum Creek, etc. are all a bunch of criminals. They actively engage in the aggressive TRANSFER OF WEALTH (also know as THEFT) from the Public Trust to their executives and shareholders.

Destroying the capacity for retaining storm water runoff is just one example. They profit. The rest of us have our property destroyed and get stuck with the bill.

Logically, property rights activist would strenuously oppose clear cutting. But they're ideologues, not logicians.

these families were victims of nature AND irresponsible neighbors who own all the trees and what is/isn't under them.

I've driven Hwy 6 once or twice a month now going into the tenth year since moving to Pac County. Hwy 101 is no different. Like shaved heads, clear cut hills and slopes stick out like sore thumbs. Residents do not need to see pictures of clearcuts to understand how their biggest neighbor failed them.

it just shows that weyerhauser can't hide behind the loggers anymore because all the loggers are practically unemployed now. and the total devistation caused by this mudslide has p.o.'d alot of people who normally would defend the company with heart and soul.
