Decline to Sign Referendum 71

From our friends at Equal Rights Washington:

>READ>TAKE ACTION>FORWARD >

Join us in opposing discrimination against same-sex partners.

Pledge to Decline to Sign Referendum 71 today. It's up to the rest of us to ensure opponents of Domestic Partnerships do not take Washington State two steps back on this critical civil rights issue.

Lawmakers took a huge step forward in protecting Washington families when they voted overwhelmingly to expand Washington's domestic partnership law and gave registered partners all of the same rights as married couples under State law. Referendum 71 was filed to repeal the Domestic Partnership Expansion Law of 2009. If referendum backers are able to collect 120,000 signatures needed to put the referendum on the ballot, registered domestic partners could lose 250 legal protections in the November election.

Yes! I decline to Sign Referendum 71

Ask your friends, family, and co-workers to take the pledge also, in order to keep Washington's Domestic Partnership Law.

Thank You!
Josh Friedes
ERW Advocacy Director

PS: Please consider making a contribution to the ERW PAC so that we can gear up to win this referendum fight.

Pledge to "decline to sign" and stop discrimination now!

I'm going to sign it: UP YOURS, BIGOTS!

--ran an organized campaign to track public signature gatherers and dispatch trained Decline to Sign volunteers.  The training was to teach people how to avoid confrontation--the idea was to strictly avoid interfering with people who wanted to sign, but to get them to think. Literature explaining reasons for not signing was passed out.

Signature gatherers were not pleased, but if they have free speech rights, so do we.

There is only one referendum or initiative for which I would sign a petition -- one demanding an end to the blight that is R&I.  Aside from that, I would never sign one of those petitions, not even those whose goals I wholeheartedly support (Ref.71 isn't in that category, of course).

I understand the origins of R&I in the history of late 19th century progressivism.  Whatever good intentions prompted the movement, the process has long-since been destroyed by the slimy government-hating, America-hating likes of California's Howard Jarvis, Oregon's Bill Sizemore, and Washington's own blight, Tim Eyman.
