GIFTS FOR KIDS -- "A CONCEPT IN MY MIND AS I WAS LYING IN A PRISON CELL"

Vance Bartley, founder of Gifts for Kids:  "You're a chickenhawk!  That's a chickenhawk hat you're wearing!"  Child: "No!  You're a BIG. FAT. chickenhawk!"  (overheard at Gifts for Kids)

The second annual Gifts for Kids was held at Nova High School in Seattle on December 19, 2009.  This day-long celebration for children of incarcerated parents was founded by Vance Bartley and co-organized by Justice Works! under the direction of Lea Zengage and Nova High School under the direction of Joleen Franklin, a teacher at the school.

Chet Hunter, working with his wife Sherry, cut and styled the hair of about 40 people.

Dozens of children poured in as the event started and they continued to arrive throughout the day.  Over 180 volunteers and donors, from both inside and outside of prison, contributed to the event.  Nova students and Justice Works! volunteers were the backbone of much of the preparation for months in advance - as well as serving during the day.

Vance Bartley, who was serving a Life Without Parole sentence under Washington's 3-Strikes law when he originated the idea of Gifts for Kids, commented on those early beginnings in thanking Lea Zengage and Joleen Franklin:  "So let me just say that what began as just an idea and a concept in my mind when I was lying in a prison cell, sentenced to do the rest of my life in prison, I brought to these ladies and they made this happen." A link to a video of Vance's presentation and the response of the women honored is HERE.

Chef Young Pang prepared gourmet - and mouth- watering - sushi.  His beautiful Japanese radish and cucumber creatures attracted a lot of attention.

The dance group, Pulse, gave an amazing step-dance performance.

Participants visited stations -- getting a stamp in their "passports" at each one -- each stamp building toward a visit to the gift room.  I worked at the first station, where kids each chose four books -- most of them donated by Reading Tree. Next, kids picked out a hand-knitted hat and scarf, courtesy of Warm for Winter.  This program, founded and organized by Janice Tufte, supplies thousands of hand-knitted hats and scarves to the homeless and other warmth-seekers.

Janice E. Tufte, Founder/ Organizer of Warm for Winter Project.  Ujima Consultants Warm for Winter Volunteers delivered 1,000 handmade hats and scarves for the children of incarcerated people to Gifts for Kids.  L-R: Quixote Vassilakis performed during open-mike, Tajuan Labee produced the 3-Strikes play, Miles Stanberry organized the recent Justice Works! fundraiser: United Justice Film Festival

Nova's new digs, Meany Middle School, seems to have endless twists and turns and rooms in unexpected places.  Most of them were filled with activities like boat-building, balloon twisting, cupcake decorating, face-painting, free play, moderated open-mike performance, hair cutting and styling, and more. The kitchen crew, including Chef Young Pang, pictured above, prepared a hearty meal.

Monique Franklin, event coordinator of Ladies First, a program of Communities Against Rape and Abuse, and owner/operator of The Inspired Child, an open mic performance series for child artists, did the organizing, staging, moderating and design for a day-long program of scheduled and open-mike performances.

L-R: Miles Stanberry, Carolyn Walden, Stevan Dozier, a former 3-Striker who was released under clemency earlier this year, and Lillian Dozier

Until their release, Vance Bartley and Stevan Dozier (photo above) were among approximately 40 three-strikers in Washington state serving Life Without Parole who were never convicted of any crime classified above a Robbery 2 -- at the lowest quarter of criminal seriousness in state law.  Nearly 100 additional Washington three-strikers have no convictions for any crimes classified as Serious Violent Offenses.  In 2001, the state's Sentencing Guidelines Commission recommended removing these lower-level crimes from the three-strikes list.  A citizen campaign to reform Washington's 3-Strikes has been fought for over a decade.  See fix3strikes.org for a list of 27 organizations supporting repeal or reform of this law.  A web form to get notice of key times to contact legislators (and to learn more about the law and the campaign): justiceisnogame.org.  If you live in Washington this campaign needs your help.

Noemie, you were ahead of the curve when you began to give attention to the 3-strikes rule and the discrepancies in penalties it has caused to individuals and their families.  I appreciated reading your article - it was uplifting and so many smiles, so many people helping each other through difficult times.  Reaching out to the children -- amen!

I'm from Califonia where some desturbing scenarios have taken place in regards to the 3 strikes law - some defendants have been given sentences of 25 years to life in prison for such crimes as shoplifting golf clubs (Gary Ewing - previous strikes for burglary and robbery with a knife) and nine videotapes (Leandro Andrade - received double sentence of 25 year-to-life for 2 counts of shoplifting).
That the state punishes shoplifting and similar crimes involving under $400 in property as felony petty theft can truly cause injustice.
I am so glad to see that you guys are organising this event not only for the people that have the chance to take part but also to get the awareness out there. It's really good to see people who have fallen victim to the 3 strikes law take part (and even coming up with the whole concept) as well. :)
Is this happening anywhere else in the country or is it just in Washington at the moment?
