Speaking of bipartisan: two GOPers for top committee spots

The extremely large Democratic house majority has reached across the aisle to pick two extremely well qualified folks to head up committees. Seattle Times:

House Democrats on Wednesday awarded two Republicans top committee posts, a concrete sign that Democrats intend to reach across the political aisle, House leaders said.

Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Roy, will be chairman of the newly formed Select Committee on Environmental Health, and Rep. Maureen Walsh, R-College Place, will be vice chairwoman of the House Committee on Early Learning & Children's Services.

Both lawmakers are favorites of the Democrats, who broadened their House majority to 62-36 last month. Campbell, a former Democrat who switched parties in 1995, is essentially an independent who doesn't sit with either party caucus. He bolted the GOP caucus a few years ago and hasn't returned. He is a moderate and often votes with the Democrats but still considers himself a Republican and was re-elected under the party label last month.

In early experiments with clustering of the WA House 2006 Roll call data Tom, Jarrett and Campbell are the three who noticeably "stand out" from the otherwise fairly well-defined (although internally unstable, computationally speaking) Republican and Democratic blocs.

The additional background on Campbell is interesting. Thanks.
