The 'Chris Marr' of farming
Last night I had the privilege of attending the 38th LD's monthly meeting, and it was a star-studded affair, very well ran, and informative.
Mayor Ray Stephenson was there, along with Dave Somers, 5th County Council District, who was on a panel about land use. County Chair Mark Hintz was also in the audience, working overtime for the party. I have to say, Mark is a helluva hard charger, and he is dead on with his ideas on how to properly grow a base for the county, and make electeds more accountable to us. It is leadership by example if I have ever seen it. The Energy Security Initiative's Meagan Dixon talked about the 15% renewable requirement initiative they are tyring to get signatures for. I am not too familiar with it, so I'll see about maybe getting her to write about what they are up to. But Tristan Klesick stole the show.
First, you have to hear Mr. Klesick speak. It cannot be written to fully grasp who he is. I mean he is so ready made for politics, anyway.
Tristan and his wife Joelle (and seven children!) live in the Stillaguamish River Valley, south of Stanwood WA. They run an organic farm with vegetables, hay, beef, goats, honey bees and chickens. And, they deliver. Its like kozmo.com merged with a farm. He was also on the land use panel with Dave Somers, and Julie Langabeer from the Snohomish County League of Women Voters, and spoke very passionately about his farm, life as a farmer and what it takes to be a farmer. He spoke to the practice of "BMP's", or Best Management Practices, and for about 15 minutes, showed us all what the urban/rural chasm is all about. The Developer Loophole initiative, or whatever it is called, was so nicely deconstructed by Tristan it was a thing of beauty.
Tristian also understands the PR problem, and spoke about messaging - I hope he shows up on Washblog, it would be much better to read it from him. Check out his family farm here.
