Creeping obsolescence of the mainstream Republican

By "mainstream", of course, I mean mainstream among their radical far-right constituency.  We know what mainstream means to the right in 2006 America - war = good, taxes = bad, deficit = good, privacy = bad, security = from Mexicans, leadership = WHA NOW?, integrity = liberal bias, science education = liberal bias, etc. etc. etc.

This is an opinion piece.  Don't knock yourself out looking for links to cited sources and stuff; I'm not into that today.  Today is just switzer's gut take on the increasing irrelevance of the political retardation foisted on America, and our fine state, by today's evangelical-driven Republican party.

America, while a by-and-large religious country, has never really been "Christian".  I'll spare you the tired "deist" info; we all know it and the crazee Churchees ain't listening.  But when you look at breakdowns, roughly 90% of the country have some religious affiliation - be it Wicca, Baptist, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, or just "spiritual", or any of the other 70-odd classifications that usually get polled.  Only 10% really have no religious affiliation at all.  That 90% is interesting, but it's so important to understand that about half that number doesn't worship (or believe in) "God", at least not the one our Christian friends do.  Good people of faith have long understood this, and the Republican right has gotten away with ignoring it, but now people are starting to say, "Hey, that's not what I believe - quit lumping me in with your craziness!"

The involvment of the Church in politicking for various candidates, initiatives or referenda is now so widely known and accepted as to be on an obvious collision course with the IRS - a worst-case scenario for everyone, not just Christians in the offending churches.  Part of the church-state separation that today's Republican doesn't understand is the wall keeping government out of the churches rather than the other way around; a distinction that was immensely important to the Founders, and is adamantly opposed by George Bush.  Allowed to control churches, one will soon find that the government doesn't like diversity; and that Mormon church will need to start acting Baptist if they want their government "help" to keep flowing.  This would be a disaster that would rend the fabric of our society in ways you can't even imagine; making today's struggles seem like a basket full of kittens in comparison.

People are starting to see this problem, because most people have a church of some sort.  They don't want their church endorsing this or that government action or candidate.  They want their church to help them reach heaven/God/Nirvana/Buddha/Yahweh/Allah.  This eroding of the clarity in church politics is, in my mind, the key point in the erosion of the Republican majority - people see a different way, and they see it doesn't have to cost them their church affiliation or their values.

Another piece of the obsolescence that warms my heart is the continued failure of booga-booga tactics.  These have been terribly effective for the last 7 years or so (they're always somewhat effective, and we use them, too), but people get tired.  They get tired of constant shrill warnings of terrorists, liberals, ungodliness - nobody likes a goody-two-shoes - and the whole thing just makes people think "Are we talking about this again?"  The lack of any scary events, after years of constant warnings, has a cumulative effect.  Massachusets is seeing this; after years of booga-booga about gay marriage, almost 2 years into having legal gay marriage, most of the state is fine with it, including conservatives.  Why?  Because their homes didn't crumble, their society didn't falter, their good kids stayed good, bowling was still on Tuesday, the church was still full on Sunday and ultimately, it just didn't matter all that much.

There's obviously more here than I can write during my lunch, and I'd like to hear what you guys think - what forms do you see the creeping obsolescence taking?  The increasing acceptance that Bush lied/s?  The increasing common knowledge that this administration is corrupt and incompetent?  The ability of conservatives to turn their humor knives on each other is a big shining beacon to the creeping obsolescence.  I'll weigh in as I can today, but I am at work and it's not always easy to do in-depth thinking nor writing, so I'll add what I can tonight.  I'm pondering this, so hopefully I'll have something worthwhile to add.  Enjoy!

It seems to me - espcially since I've been reading Michael Lerner's book, "The Left Hand of God" - that the Democratic Party has left all spiritual/religious categories to be used by the Right. For many people, the decisions they make, including political decisions, are based on their spiritual direction. Since the Democrats have no passion when it comes to discussing awe at the universe and creation, their message rings hollow to people that are concerned about this message. I'm concerned because this message lacks any sort of faith and reaks of elitism. Regardless of one's religious affiliation, there are certain morals that are true in any religion or peoples' government: The Golden Rule, Shame to Community, Universal Love, etc. Without a coherent message addressing these deeply human passions, the Democrats look like the baby-killing misanthropes that we're not...

One is what Arthur Ruger refers to - The underlying religious value of compassion does not point the society in the direction the Repugs want it to point.

However, the hierarchical, authoritarian idea of religion does point us all in a conservative direction. And yet, in the same way Massachussets didn't fall into the Atlantic the moment gays started to get married, neither do ANY of the prophecies of religion come true, except by chance. Religion explains less and less of the world around us. It's less useful because it's not true. Yesterday a man got into the lion enclosure in the Kiev zoo, claiming that God would keep him safe. The lions showed the same reverence for Christ and God they usually show and ate him.

Conservatives know this and they react by piling on the religious rhetoric and forcing images of atheism down people's throats so that they will cough them back up again. But it can't work for long.

Apologies to the religious people here, but there is no more a God than there is a Loch Ness Monster. It's a myth we use to comfort ourselves -- a catch-all explanation for what we don't understand, and it's a failing myth.

Don't get me wrong. At some level I'm a believer if only because even I am too old not to be. I grew up in a world where people believe as a matter of course. But soon people won't believe because the evidence for non-belief will be overwhelming. Already most religios people ignore most of the Torah, Mishna, Talmud, Old Testament, New Testament, and Koran. Soon there will be so little left that we don't ignore that the Books will lose meaning.

Conservative religios people see that day coming and they fear it. This gives them an over-arching social agenda:

"Hold Back The Tide"

Their economic and foreign policy agendas are also failing. But we should not ignore the fact that this is all long-run stuff. In the near term, Conservatives absolutely control the political discourse in this nation.
