Worries about Edwards

A report today on a speech made by John Edwards has some truly worrisome points.

Edwards:

"...To ensure that Iran never gets nuclear weapons, we need to keep ALL options on the table, Let me reiterate - ALL options must remain on the table.

"...The vast majority of people are concerned about what is going on in Iraq. This will make the American people reticent toward going for Iran. But I think the American people are smart if they are told the truth, and if they trust their president. So Americans can be educated to come along with what needs to be done with Iran."

Hermann Goering:
"Why of course the people don't want war. But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along...the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders...All you have to do is to tell them that they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."

Here are some clips from the whole speech.  Much of it was devoted to the Israeli-Palestine conflict.  Those parts are problematic in some ways but don't need discussion here.

"Iran must know world won't back down"

In a speech at a conference in Herzliya, Israel, former Senator John Edwards (D-NC) took aim at Iran, warning that the "world won't back down."

Although Edwards has criticized the war in Iraq, and has urged bringing the troops home, the former senator firmly declared that "all options must remain on the table," in regards to dealing with Iran, whose nuclear ambition "threatens the security of Israel and the entire world."

"Let me be clear: Under no circumstances can Iran be allowed to have nuclear weapons,"

"Once Iran goes nuclear, other countries in the Middle East will go nuclear, making Israel's neighborhood much more volatile," Edwards said.

Edwards added, "Iran must know that the world won't back down. The recent UN resolution ordering Iran to halt the enrichment of uranium was not enough. ...To ensure that Iran never gets nuclear weapons, we need to keep ALL options on the table, Let me reiterate - ALL options must remain on the table."

"... If they [Iran] have nuclear weapons, other states in the area will want them, and this is unacceptable." [No mention of Israel's nuclear armament - which, unlike Iran's program, is not under the scrutiny of the IATA.]

"As to what to do, we should not take anything off the table. More serious sanctions need to be undertaken, which cannot happen unless Russia and China are seriously on board, which has not happened up until now. I would not want to say in advance what we would do, and what I would do as president, but there are other steps that need to be taken. For example, we need to support direct engagement with Iranians, we need to be tough. But I think it is a mistake strategically to avoid engagement with Iran. [Awkward transcription?  This seems somewhat ambiguous.]

"The vast majority of people are concerned about what is going on in Iraq. This will make the American people reticent [reluctant?] toward going for Iran. But I think the American people are smart if they are told the truth, and if they trust their president. So Americans can be educated to come along with what needs to be done with Iran.

Am I over-reacting? It seems that Edwards stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Goering - and Bush, Cheney, Rove, Norquist, Strauss.

He voted to authorize Bush to invade Iraq, siding with the neocons .  `Had I but known..."  We knew; millions of us; without paid staff to do our homework for us; we knew.

His view on the Israeli-Palestine conflict is badly slanted.  See the full text.  He's a full-fledged partisan.  This is not the stance of a peace-maker.

And in 2004 he and Kerry mumbled when they should have shouted in defense of the Constitution.

Is this ihe kind of leadership Democrats need?

I'm open to other ideas.  Or perhaps there are corrections or clarifications? But for now - stay home, John.

At the risk of too much "self promotion", I have a bit to say about the ongoing escalation of "war rhetoric" with regard to Iran overhere and here at The Left Shue.

For those who missed This on Postman's Blog:

"A hawkish D.C. think tank is running TV commercials in the Beltway area pushing the White House to get tough with Iran. The American Foreign Policy Council has bought time to run two 30-second spots for a week on D.C.-area cable news channels, going up in time to coincide with tonight's State of the Union address.

The council says the ad is "aimed at educating the American public about the growing threat posed by a nuclear Iran."

To repeat my conclusion from one of the posts linked above,

"Don't get me wrong. I am not supportive of any proliferation of nuclear weaponry. However, diplomacy through hypocrisy cannot produce any result other than hostility; which brings us back to the crux of the argument.

Peace through War - the Bush Doctrine."

And it brings me close to deciding against Edwards. Of course, a president cannot take any option off the table when deciding on the security of a nation.  That is assumed.  But this is warlike language that is not called for by a candidate, that reveals, it seems, a focus less on security than grandstanding / posturing.

On a different topic -- it's inflammatory to compare Edwards to Goering.  Surely there are people who've made similar statements about bringing the populace along...who were not on that  demonic level.

Postman's piece on the ads to attack Iran are very worrisome, as well.

Climate change poses way more of a national security threat than any nation.

* the diarist said that it was all the votes they differed on - I'm not going to spend 2 seconds verifying any of it.

We Americans have found ourselves in a pivotal era where we have traded humanity for patriotism. Where we have traded civil liberties for a sense of security. I stand here before you sharing the same idea as Henry David Thoreau: as an American, and as a Human Being, we mustn't lend ourselves to that same evil which we condemn." Quoted from:
