State Democrats to get on the cluetrain? (reading between the lines)

The state Democratic Party is hiring a "Grassroots Mobilization Manager," which as far as I can tell is a new position. They already have on staff an Outreach Manager, so this seems to be a position more closely focussed on getting people involved in the party, especially focussed on their email list.

I'm not too impressed with building an email list as opposed to a broader community building effort, but I'll admit its a start. And, putting one person in charge of building that list is an important step. It means it isn't simply a side effort, but that the party is really putting effort behind it. And, who knows, we might get someone really good in that job who sees the need to move beyond just a one-to-many email list.

Here's the job description from the position announcement:

GRASSROOTS MOBILIZATION MANAGER

The Grassroots Mobilization Manager will:
* Craft and manage an online strategy for the organization that seeks to increase membership, increase Party visibility, and foster activist support by using the website and blast e-mail list

* Own all aspects of the Web site, including, but not limited to, its content and functionality
* Own the blast e-mails, with knowledge of how blast e-mails should be crafted
* Work with and manage vendor relationships              &am; p;nb sp;                & amp; nbsp;
* Collaborate with the Communications Director, Development Director, Technology Director, and Field Director to implement communications, fundraising, technology, and field strategy on the Web site and in our blast e-mails
* Collaborate with the Communications Directors and the Executive Director on the production of public relations and informational materials including newsletters, handbooks, videos, podcasts and information booklets
* Perform graphic design for the organization, including maintaining the design of the website, blast e-mails, pamphlets, and other materials, as needed.

I could see someone doing a very good job in this position beyond managing an email list. I think its a good move.

by getting unsolicited emails?  I already am constantly getting Ted Kennedy's emails and I never asked for them.  If I didn't like Ted so much I'd get real ticked off from it.

Now my SISTER sends me stuff and it's real good.  Like a video showing what it costs to simply have the bare minimums to live and then showing how in debt you'd be trying to live with the bare minimum at today's minimum wage.  That's powerful stuff she's sending me.  But Ted doesn't send me any of the good stuff.  He has a secretary who's secretary sends me these "We're not gonna take it anymore (please send money)" emails that are supposed to either outrage me or make me feel good that someone's fighting for me.  But I don't want that rah-rah crap.

So how they work the email list is going to determine if paying this guy is just a waste of money or not IMO.
