"Long on promises and short on facts."

That's how North Kitsap County Commissioner Chris Endresen described the now-defunct proposal to build a NASCAR racetrack in Kitsap County.  The International Speedway Corporation (ISC) has announced it is no longer going to pursue the project. Great Western Sports president Grant Lynch had this to say in a press release:

It has recently become apparent that, despite the significant revisions we have already made to the legislation, various constituents were proposing several additional modifications to the bill in order for it to proceed.  These additional changes to the legislation were unnacceptable and would have had a significant negative impact on our financial model for the speedway development.  Therefore, we have decided to no longer pursue the speedway development at the current location.

Translation under the fold

TRANSLATION:  We couldn't get the sweet deal we wanted at the expense of the Kitsap taxpayers.  They actually wanted us to GUARANTEE the costs if the track didn't bring in enough revenue.  Screw that.

Or as Phil Rockefeller put it:

They were always saying that everything could be negotiated but didn't provide facts.  They never said how they would guarantee the costs if the revenue didn't materialize.

I guess ISC meant negotiate as in negotiate how far Kitsap taxpayers should bend over.

Goodbye and Good Riddance!  This is no great loss for Kitsap County.  As Poulsbo Mayor Katherine Quade pointed out, no track "gives us an opportunity to focus on economic development we all want."

Of course, not everyone is happy to see the would-be Corporate Welfare Kings slink off.  Bremerton Mayor Cary Bozeman must have been grinding his teeth at what he called a "missed opportunity".

I think it's unfortunate.  It would have meant $2 million to the city of Bremerton.

Yeah Cary, and, uh, how much would it have meant to the county taxpayers again?  Considering that the bulk of them come from Bremerton Mr. Mayor, perhaps you should do the math?  $2 million in YOUR coffers, tens of millions out of the pockets of Bremerton taxpayers.  Is THAT what passes for fiscal responsibility in the Republican Party Mr. Bozeman?

The same company is building a similar track in New York with private funding only.  Apparently they think we're a bunch of rubes out here.
