Interra's Community Loyalty Card: Business-Consumer Organizing at the Point-of-Sale
PUGET SOUND COMMUNITY CHANGE TO LAUNCH IN OCTOBER
When businesses work to influence consumer decisions, it's called marketing. When consumer groups do it, it's called organizing. The two arenas are often seen to be at odds. But imagine a situation in which consumers and locally-owned business organize together for both increased profit -- and on behalf of sustainability and social justice goals. And imagine that this is no gimmick or "greenwash" -- but a practical, authentic, people and place-based campaign in which both sides are on equal footing. Imagine, further, that it's a process without risk or inconvenience to the customer or business but is seamlessly integrated in the daily business of point-of-sale transactions.
This is a description of the Interra Project's community loyalty program. It's a program that's as likely to spark the interest of chambers of commerce and main street associations -- as that of social and environmental justice nonprofits. From the consumer's standpoint, it's an account that provides them rebates, channels funds to schools and nonprofits of their choice, supports their local community, and helps them better align their daily buying habits with their values. From the merchant's standpoint, it's a suite of sophisticated cause marketing tools that allows them to more effectively compete with big-box retail and to connect with other local businesses and suppliers. Interra brings together the commercial and philanthropic worlds on equal footing because the motivation on both sides is equally shared: investment in the local community. Fittingly, the program was founded by visionaries with credibility in both arenas, including Greg Steltenpohl, founder of Odwalla; Dee Hock, founder of Visa International; and Jon Ramer of WiserCommons and SmartChannels. And one of its central innovations is that it holds the only philanthropic account on the U.S. credit card and banking Interchange. "While agricultural exports generate about $1.70 of community income for every dollar of sales, we conservatively estimate a return of over $2.80 to the (Washington) state economy on farmers market sales." (Economic Impact of Washington State's Farmer's Markets and the WIC and Senior FMNP Farmers Markets Check Redemption Programs, Dr. Viki Sonntag, Research Director, Sustainable Seattle, January 8, 2007.)
