Ron Gipson - Everett's Sex Crusader

Look out Las Vegas. Call Reno 911. Everett Washington is on its way to claiming the title "Sin City Northwest." Under the headline, "More sex for sale in Everett" Everett Herald reporter Diana Hefely tells us, "Everett police have received an increasing number of complaints of prostitutes in south Everett. Business owners say the crime is bad for business." She goes on to write, "More women are coming to Everett to sell sex. Police say it's dangerous for the women, their customers and the public.

"Some say it's a victimless crime. We don't see it that way. We see the girls get victimized and assaulted and robbed. We see the customers get beat up and robbed," Everett police Lt. Dan Templeman said. "If we can change behavior, even if it gets one or two people out of it, I think it's worth it."" But wait. A moral crusader is on the way. Enter Everett City Councilman Ron Gipson.

"Everett City Councilman Ron Gipson recently proposed that the city post the pictures of the people convicted of soliciting a prostitute on Everett's cable station and Web site. He said he believes humiliation is just punishment for people who exploit young women."

Gipson, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for mayor in 2005, is facing his toughest challenge yet in retaining his city council seat. In the recent primary, while he finished with a comfortable lead over his closest rival in a four-way contest, he only garnered 45% of the vote. With less than 50% of the voters choosing him and with the 3rd and 4th place finishers pledging their support to his November challenger, popular community activist Charlene Rawson, Gipson knows that he needs something to keep his name in the papers and boost his image as a civic leader. His apparent solution? Sex Sells. And it appears to be working.

This is the second Herald story to feature Gipson's new crusade in just four days. On Tuesday, the headline read, Everett councilman proposes shame as prostitution punishment  In that story, Herald reporter David Chircop writes, "City Councilman Ron Gipson wants to use the city's cable station and Web site to shine a spotlight on people mixed up in the world's oldest profession.

Gipson said it's time to shame people with what he called a "modern scarlet letter." He thinks mugshots of people convicted of soliciting prostitution should be plastered on Everett TV 21 and the Internet."

Of course, not being able to resist any story that contains both the elements of sex and politics, both KING and KOMO TV were "on the scene" with cameras and reporters to help Ron get his face and name into the homes of thousands of viewers. While they do confirm that Gipson is seeking re-election they are quick to buy his explanation that his "modern day scarlet letter" crusade has nothing to do with that coincidence.

By the way, just how pervasive is our commercial sex epidemic in Everett? According to the piece from David Chircop, "Everett police in 2006 arrested 34 people for prostitution-related crimes." For reference, Everett's population is listed at some 109,000 - higher when the fleet is in.

Note to the media: Everett, like every other city in Snohomish County, is facing real problems of population growth with limited land resources, affordable housing concerns that are reaching critical mass, issues of environment and energy that must be dealt with sooner rather than later. Perhaps if Ron Gipson were spending more time in the community discussing these issues as Charlene Rawson has been doing for so many years, he wouldn't have so much time to spend obsessing over 16th century solutions to 1st century "problems."

Peace,
Chad (The Left) Shue

Although Gipson himself maybe a moron of the lowest order. I don't know.

When liberal-minded people consider street prostitution, I think they start from a very naive premise. The idea is that the prostitutes are simply making a  rational choice as to what kind of job to have.

But a woman or child who is a prostitute on the street must have a very strong external motivator to push her into such a dangerous and embarrassing situation. Homelessness, drug addiction and/or sociopathic pimps/criminals are behind street prostitution.

Thus the money going into street prostitution enables very dangerous and destructive people and behaviors. Street prostitutes must be considered victims and sufferers and treated. But logically there must also be a check on the impulses of the  men who create the market.

It seems to me that public embarrassment is a very  gentle way to supress the market and it also creates visual information that can be used to help the prostitutes who are in trouble.

Legalizing prostitution is something that our society has effectively already done. Hard-core pornography and stripping (given what we've found out actually happens in strip clubs) are prostitution. What else do you call it when people make a living doing sex acts?

It's now a question of keeping the most vulnerable people away from the "trade" and managing the expression of demand for it.
