Dorsol Plants to run for City Council

Dorsol Plants, Chair of Highland Park Action Committee, has announced that he "feels called" to run for Seattle CityCouncil, continuing his community activism within city government.

You may remember my stories about West Seattle's Highland Park neighborhood. One ongoing story is organized opposition to the City Jail sites proposals in our neighborhood.

Highland Park again made the news when a Tent City sprung up at one of the very sites at the center of the controversy.

Elected in June 2008 after a vancancy left our group without a Chair during this crisis, Dorsol Plants, a US Army veteran, did not hesitate to take a leadership role on these subjects and others. He has earned the great respect of community activists much older than he.

At right is Dorsol chairing an HPAC meeting, after rushing from work on the bus, in a transitional stage between goatee and clean-shaven. As a candidate, Dorsol, you must now decide on an image, one or the other!

More below:

Dorsol has presented our neighborhood's position at a number of public forums and community groups, plus the 34th District Democrats. REPORT~~~VIDEO on West Seattle Blog~~~

The latest forum was this week, when the topic was a possible downtown location for the City Jail. This site was added, we feel, possibly because of our constant lobbying of the council and city employees in that direction. The activists from Highland Park are the most numerous of the neighborhood groups at these events.

Dorsol led our neighborhood's response to "Nickelsville" when he urged the membership to be supportive of the activists. Employed at a downtown homeless shelter, he's familar with the problem of urban homelessness. Dorsol was interviewed by KOMO news at the site. PHOTOS

Dorsol Plants is now well known to city officials, community leaders, and members of the local media. He's already received declarations of support from some of the 34th District activists.

I've agreed to make a campaign website for Dorsol Plants. He asked me because he realizes that he will never hear the end of it from me, if I disapprove of his campaign graphics!

Whoever he runs against (he has been warned not to run against Nick Licata, haha).

I have been working with Dorsol on an ongoing basis in the 34th District, before and since the jail issue popped up. He is a super guy, serious and unassuming, not a self-promoter.

Dorsol is very realistic about his chances to be elected. He knows he is "just another community organizer" who probably will run against some rich, well-connected, fully funded candidate backed by big developers, or by the mandarin class of public sector bureaucrats.

He carries on nevertheless. He speaks for communities and for people at the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum. Can anyone deny that we need more such voices.

Dorsol is unflappable. He is not some punk kid. He is a combat veteran of the Iraq war. He is smart and he soaks up information like a sponge.

If he is not elected this time, he will be elected to something soon. His desire to serve, and his ability to do so and do it well, will become apparent soon enough.

I am proud to support my friend and brother-in-arms, Dorsol Plants, for Seattle City Council, even though I do not live or vote in Seattle. We need more like him to step up and run.

If perception is reality, then the world must be flat and the sun must revolve around it.

I there are a couple going to be vacant.  I would like to know where he stands on Neighborhood Planning and if he supports bottom up democratic processes as opposed to the developer/Mayor/and council fanagling.

Let me start by thanking the people who have listed their support for me here on this post. It is very humbling to see the names of people I have a great deal of respect for showing their support for my decision.

For the number of people who said you needed to get to know me, please do so. I enjoy questions and any opportunity to discuss politics be it local, national, or international. Feel free to send me an email at dorsol.plants@gmail.com or visit my website at www.dorsolplants.com .

Now I noticed that two people listed that they felt I was being a tad audacious. When I saw that, the first thing I did was look the word up in the dictionary. Not that I didn't recognize the word but because its one of those words with multiple meanings and I wanted to get a feel for each of them. My dictionary gave two: "showing a willingness to take bold risks" or "showing an impudent lack of respect". I do agree with the first definition. I have developed a reputation as a bit of a risk taker, I joined the army during a time of war as a scout, and earned parachutist wings by; as my favorite NCO put it, "jumping out of a perfectly good airplane." This run for City Council is another bold risk I have decided to make after much thought. It is a risk of both time and money, but one that I feel is well worth it. In times such as these I think we need someone who will take educated risks. Someone who is willing to make difficult decisions that will serve the best interest of the neighborhoods of Seattle

I do not however accept the second definition. I can assure that I have not made this decision lightly, and I have all the respect in the world for the office I am seeking. It is not out of a feeling of self importance or impudent pride, but an honest desire to serve and see the city grow and prosper.

Once again, thank you to everyone that responded to this post. It has meant the world to me!
