Marko Liias to Face Youthful Challenge

From Jerry Cornfield at The Petri Dish comes the story of Andrew Funk:

"Andrew Funk, who is studying accounting and business at Edmonds Community College, plans to run as a Republican against Rep. Marko Liias, D-Mukilteo.

Funk, 18, said he was getting discouraged that no one in the Grand Old Party stepped forward in the 21st Legislative District so he decided he would."

Oh the impetuous nature of Republican youth.

While I would never want to discourage the youth of today from becoming more involved in their communities and politics, there are more than just a couple of things wrong with this picture - not the least of which is the fact that Mr. Funk has chosen to challenge one of the true rising stars in the Democratic Party and the Washington State Legislature in Marko Liias.

More below the fold.......

Marko, like our young Mr. Funk, realized a need to become active in the governing process at an early age. Unlike Mr. Funk (and many young Republicans) Marko understood that the right to govern must be earned by developing the trust of your constituents. After graduating from Kamiak High School (in the district he now serves in Olympia) and Georgetown University - spending some of his time studying in Belgium and the Czech Republic, Marko returned to Mukilteo where, as a small business owner, he served as Chair of the Mukilteo Chamber of Commerce and, in 2006, was elected to the Mukilteo City Council. Marko's political path has included stints as President of the Snohomish County Chapter of the Young Democrats, PCO for Mukilteo-09, and in January, 2008 was appointed to complete the legislative term of Brian Sullivan upon his election to the Snohomish County Council.

In his first term in Olympia, Marko has been a strong advocate for Education Reform, Affordable Housing, and Civil Rights for all of Washington's citizens. Of particular note for me was Marko's floor speech in support of the "Local Option Bill" for public financing of campaigns.

As for Andrew Funk, Cornfield writes of him:

"...He said he'll focus on policies to cap property tax increases, reduce state spending, improve transportation, revamp the testing and curriculum in high schools and impose stricter punishment on convicted criminals." Hmmm...maybe he would be better served to simply review the contributions of the young man he would replace. He might also heed the long lived (and true) adage, "If it ain't broke - don't fix it."

By the way, if you would like to offer Marko Liias you support in his upcoming campaign to retain his seat in Olympia, please visit his campaign website or sign up as a supporter on his Facebook site

I want to thank Chad for a very nice front page story on my campaign.  It has been a privilege to represent the 21st District, and I was pleased to be able to stand up for our shared progressive values this session.

That being said, this is my first time on the ballot district-wide, and while my opponent does have his challenges, I am not taking this campaign lightly.

I am going to depend on our tried and true strategy, talking to voters, and take my message door-to-door.  If you want to help, either with funds, or with your feet, Chad kindly posted the links in his story.

Thanks again to the Washblog community, together we can do it!

All my best,
Marko
