The History behind Winter Soldier

The first Winter Soldier event was organized in 1971 by Vietnam Veterans Against the War in response to a growing list of human rights violations occurring in Vietnam.

From March 13-16, 2008, IVAW organized a national Winter Solider: Iraq and Afghanistan outside Washington, DC. This four-day event brought together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and present video and photographic evidence.

In addition, panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists gave context to the testimony. These panels covered everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans' health benefits and support.

IVAW on PBS NewsHour tonight.

Tonight, May 21st, the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer will have a report on IVAW's recent Winter Soldier on the Hill hearings in Congress.

The NewsHour broadcasts at 6pm local time on most PBS stations, and is repeated later in the evening on some stations.

(Featured tonight won PBS Newshour with Jim Lehrer tonight is the original national Winter Soldiers who gave testimony to Congress this year on March 13-16m 2008 weekend -- not to be confused with local IVAW Town Hall event being held in Seattle on May 31st.)

Thanks for posting this.  I previously put a short blurb up and got too busy the last couple of days so I did not have a chance until now to sit down to add  the info from the email that got sent out this week.

I went to the organizing meeting on Tuesday to get some posters and flyers.  Lots of energy.  Folks will be leafleting at events this weekend and bannering all week.

Significantly, there was a man working with a project to organize Mental Health professionals to provide confidential pro-bono care to Iraq and Afghanistan vets and their families.  He said they got alot of response from this story in the newspaper http://www.thenewstribune.com/front/topstories/story/360924.html but desperatley need help with organization and technical infrastrucure.

I also met a woman organizing alternative medicine providers.

In March, I read the live blogs and watched taped testimony of the National Winter Soldier event.  Last week, I watched CNN as these fine young people testified before the Congressional Progressive Caucus.  The personal experiences and testimony confront us, in heartrending detail, with the human costs of this illegal occupation for Americans and Iraqis.

Now, we in the Seattle area can see and hear it live.

This event is a critical experience for the high school and college-aged, anyone in the services or considering joining the military.  It’s a must for anyone who has children, grandchildren, who know young people, or cares about our next generation.
