Define "Faithful"

Given: The Washington Association of Churches (WAC) is the lead organization in building a Movement of the Faithful in WA State, just what do we mean by "the Faithful?"

Good question.

Our own designation (WAC) points to a definition something like, "people who go to church, i.e. Christians, are the faithful."

A broader definition would use "Interfaith," language and probably have something to do with those who participate in the "Great Religions," and their off-shoots, and would squeeze Unitarians, say, or B'ahians in there.

But it seems no matter how far the definition gets broadened we're stuck inside the edifice of, "church," though the building itself may actually be a temple or mosque, or other church-like space.

So let's take the given of the WAC as the lead organization, and just look at the word - "faithful."

Merriam-Webster proves to be our friend on this one:

Main Entry: 1faith*ful
Function: adjective
1 obsolete : full of faith
2 : steadfast in affection or allegiance
3 : firm in adherence to promises or in observance of duty

Even the obsolete points to: "1 a : allegiance to duty or a person, b: (1) : fidelity to one's promises (2) : sincerity of intentions" as the primary definition, and that's where we're coming from.

The Movement of the Faithful is meant to encompass organizations and individuals who are steadfast, firm in adherence to promises or in observance of duty, who act with sincere intentions.

The Movement of the Faithful sees justice as its duty; justice as its promise; and justice achieved through compassionate, but tough political action as its intention.

What's your definition?

hello

I love WAC, not only because I know Loren well, but because your website kept my hopes alive for environmentalism, back in the dark days around the 2004 election. I can't find it now, but there used to be a carbon calculator. I thought that was pretty cool for a church website!

Anyways, I have to tell you the truth. I don't like using the word "faithful" because that's got two meanings, and the other meaning is a thing between me and my husband. Also, I don't have any idea what you are talking about. A church is not a building. The building is a tool for the host church (and other non-profit organizations) to use to provide services to the local community.
