New Polls Suggest that in the 8th All Politics are National
The new polls released this week showed a big jump in the numbers for Darcy Burner who has pulled into a virtual dead heat with Dave Reichert. The polls conducted by King 5/SurveyUSA show that a sampling of voters said that 50% would vote for Reichert and 48% would vote for Burner with a 4.3% error margin. This is great news but more importantly it tells us why the voters feel the way they do. This year it's all about Bush.
The question is what do we Democrats and specifically Darcy Burner need to do with this information? The numbers don't lie. 94% of the voters that disapprove of George W. will vote for Burner. If we get the other 6% then Burner has the election in the bag come November. These 6% are likely Republicans that although they can't stand Bush the thought of voting Democrat makes their toes curl. How do we sway these folks?
I say we need to ride the Bush horse all the way to the finish line and ride him hard. We need to make those Republicans understand that a vote for Reichert is a vote for Bush. We need to talk about the kind of policies Reichert will be rubber stamping for the Prez such as the continued war in Iraq with all that it entails. Let's talk about Halliburton and the corrupt war profiteering under George and the Republican House and Senate. Explain how it will continue unabated running into the trillions of dollars for the American taxpayer because Republicans like Reichert only want to say yes to W and not provide the oversight that the voters sent them there to perform. The latest National Republican Congressional Committee flyer I received was happy to lie about how much Darcy was going to cost taxpayers if she was elected. Why not respond with some real numbers of our own? How about telling folks that rather than finding solutions to problems such as Health Care and Social Security that Bush and his Congressional helpers are costing taxpayers 5.6 billion dollars a month during 2005 for the occupation in Iraq according to the Institue of Policy Studies. These 6% of Republican voters in the 8th District are probably good Americans so a discussion of issues such as our Constitution and our Bill of Rights would be appropriate. Burner couldn't possibly agree with the current assault on these sacred documents by this administration and approved of by the Reichert types in Washington D.C. I believe she should say so loud and clear while pointing out how her opponent thinks it's great. Democrats must stop running as if they're afraid! You do that when you let the Republicans set the agenda. The Republicans are going to run on security...again. Although I appreciate Darcy pointing out her military connections and the hypocrisy of Reichert/Republicans talking about protecting our troops while cutting Veterans Benefits I still think that it makes it look as if she needs to PROVE she is even more pro-troops then Reichert. How about a commercial about how our very American ideals are at stake in this election? I mean can we talk about phone tapping without feeling defensive for gawds sake?! Would it be terrible to point out that you can't Cut and Run from an unfair occupation that you can only retreat with dignity and generosity to say nothing of apologies. What if the large hero on the block picked a fight with the scrawny kid next door because of a perceived threat but while the large hero was pummeling the little kid he was told that there actually was no threat? Since when in America has the answer to that question been to continue the beating because it would be dishonerable to stop? Only since Bush and his cronies redefined morality in this country. Let's talk about that! Truth has been the most abused of us all during the Bush administration. Perhaps the best way of beating him is to start talking about what is True and what is not. If we talk Truth about Bush and Reichert, if we don't give credit to their lies and policies by allowing them to set the agenda for this election, if we take back our right to believe that what they are doing is wrong then I believe the people of the 8th District will wake up and recognize that a change of direction is the only thing that can save them.
