Reichert vs. Burner Roundup (WA-08)

[Front paged, NM. Natasha says Reichert's denial of climate disruption makes her want to .... canvass. To canvass for Darcy (Palamedes says:): 425.454.0622. The stakes are real, the time is here.]

Darcy Burner responds to the AARP candidate questionnaire, but so far, Dave Reichert (R WA-08) has blown them off.

Dave Reichert skipped out on the League of Women Voters candidate forum on Mercer Island, but apparently, everybody managed to have a good time without him. Darcy Burner and the candidates for the two 41st Legislative District races were there to talk about their positions and answer questions.

Al Gore responds to Reichert's denial of global warming, or as Darcy Burner might call it, catastrophic climate disruption. You can read more about Burner's thoughts on global warming here. And, as we've noted before, Reichert is one of the bright lights that the GOP has decided to put on the House Science Committee. That just makes me want to ... canvass. That's right. Canvass.

This Seattle P-I article notes that dissatisfaction with the national GOP is hurting Reichert. However, it also describes Reichert as having "bucked the Bush administration on key issues ... without losing favor." Apparently they missed the speech where Reichert says he mostly votes against the majority when he's told to, in order to keep the seat Republican.

The Drum Major Institute gives Reichert an 'F' on the middle class issues legislative scorecard.

Mina, Emma or David will pick up the phone.  They are directly involved in all field efforts for Darcy's campaign.

Today, for the first time since April 29th, I came down to Auburn (my hometown) to doorbell for Darcy. My walk list was comprised of theoretically undecided voters. I felt like I was at ground zero of the ground campaign. Most people I talked to hadn't voted yet, and most were still undecided. A few said they'd vote Republican, but even one Republican said he didn't like Reichert and would consider Darcy Burner. I ended up talking to so many people that I couldn't finish my precinct before I ran out of steam.

Almost everyone was courteous. Many listened attentively. The thing that impressed me most was that when I introduced myself, many men shook my hand before I even began to talk about Darcy. No one ever shakes my hand in Ballard when I doorbell. I liked it. It was civil, and it began the conversation with a gesture of mutual respect.

I was doorbelling in a fairly rural part of Renton. Most of the people were - and said they remained - undecided. But aside from one rude person, most were very respectful and willing to listen, and add their two cents. I think this part of the district is very much the epitome of the "swing" and "independent" voters. There were lots of Yes ON I-933 signs, so it was somewhat hostile territory, but i definitely think it's possible to change that area from purple to blue by 2008.

It was exciting to see so many 20 and 30-somethings working in the campaign office. That's a very hopeful sign for the future of the party.
