Gallows Humor?

Originally posted at The Left Shue

Apparently John Kerry botched a joke about George W. Bush. It has been under-reported that the text of Kerry's prepared remarks was distributed to the media prior to his misstatement. The text includes the words "end up getting us" before the offending "stuck in Iraq". It clearly shows his remarks were aimed at Bush and not the troops. Bush and the republicans were quick to attack Senator Kerry.

Here is the video of Kerry's remark:

Now I would like you to compare Kerry's attempt at humor to a different attempt at joke making:

far more hurtful and offensive to me when he made jokes about looking for WMD while my two loved ones were deployed already in Iraq.  I have never forgotten, nor will I ever likely forget how badly and inappropriately this Commander-in-Chief behaved then and continues to behave now with troops in combat in Iraq.....

As to Senator Kerry's remarks, I wouldn't have known about them at all if not for the 'flap' being made about what he said and didn't say and meant to say but didn't say.

The images of the President, the Commander-in-Chief making a video joke to entertain his political 'base' about misplaced WMD, looking in closets, bent over looking under a desk, during time of war - that was seriously stomach turning.  Listening to the laughter at the President's joke while our young people were already dying in sacrifice of life and limb in Iraq --- remind people of how insensitive is this President and Commander-in-Chief before getting too anxious about defending a fellow Democrat.

It's not about Senator Kerry, or Senator Cantwell, it's about this President, this Adminstatration and the invasion/occupation in Iraq.  It's this President who invaded, who misled, who initiated a pre-emptive war.  It's this President, who as Commander-in-Chief continues insensitivity to our troops except as the occassion of acknowledging them furthers his own political agenda.  He uses our troops as stage dressing, keeps a Secretary of Defense in Donald Rumsfeld who has destroyed our military prowess, keeps a country in divisive polarization over a concept of patriotism while real people, our side and theirs, die in Iraq.

Remember who is squarely responsible for Iraq invasion/occupation = President George W. Bush.  And it doesn't hurt to remember with displeasure our Congress people who helped him do it.  It doesn't hurt to expect more from our Congress people in ending it once they've seen the light and error of their ways.

I happened to come across Charlie Rangell doing point/counterpoint with some suitably affable Republican on the television yesterday. I wasn't paying complete attention, and what I'm about to recount only struck me after the fact: an hour or so later when I was doing something else. In fact he may not have said it, it could be my flawed recollection; but in case he did then credit where due because it was brilliant.

Affable R make a comment about something being as likely as "a glass of water in hell". Charlie, bless his heart and wit, says something like:

"You'd expect to surf."

What a metaphor!

the dems should have excerpted the gems, AND

EVERYONE should have been hammering those bastards with the gems.

instead, the Dems are doing their usual screw each other on message / hide from the meanie thugs cuz then we'll scare the middle and we'll lose.

EVERYTHING ANYONE does is subject to thug lies,
So, FIGHT back, OR,

do what hillary does and fucking hide & cede the debate, the field, the media to the thugs.

no wonder we can barely win with pathetic incompetent 'leaders' like hillary.

ugh.

"Democrats cringed, though, at the prospect of the Massachusetts senator becoming the face of the party for the second consecutive national campaign. "No one wants to have the 2004 election replayed," said Sen.        Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., like Kerry, a potential contender for the 2008 nomination."

Anyone notice how John Kerry thinks this is about him?  His rightious declarations that "I'm not going to stand for this, I'm going to fight back."  Well, JFKerry, it's not about you.  Next time you want to tell "jokes", you go ahead and not, k?

I'd expect a little more fire discipline from a vet like him.  He needed to fall on that grenade and apologize, and I'm glad he did, even though all he did was screw up a line in a speech.  But you can't give these guys an inch.

Ofcourse JFKerry could have avoided all this by correcting himself within 10 seconds of his goof-up, even if it's uncomfortable.  But he didn't.

It's called a Freudian slip.  Regardless of his speech writers intent, John Kerry's unconscious mind seems to have taken the reins.
