What happened to Alex Alben?

Two and a half years ago, former tech executive Alex Alben was seemingly on his way to the Democratic nomination for the 8th CD. He had raised a cool half million and the endorsement of the majority of the state's congressional Democrats and the sitting governor.

Of course, then Dave Ross cut to the front of the line.

I understand the logic of then state chair Paul Berendt's logic for lobbying Ross to run. At the time, the one big knock against Alben was that he wasn't as well known at Reichart.

Apparently, as we can see two years later, it isn't a lack of name recognition that really hurts you when you're running against Reichart. Darcy Burner "came out of nowhere" and gave him a stronger challenge than Ross.

So, what happened to Alben? Is he off the face of the earth, only really gunning for that one house race and then done?

Also, what I'm wondering, would have Alben won in 2006? I'm not trying to knock Darcy, I'm just wondering.

Alben's been active behind the scenes.

Let's not all 2nd guess the 8th CD race over and over again.  Darcy ran, Ross Hunter and all the other guy sat it out.  It's uncool to throw this back on Darcy.

There were several big knocks against Alben.  He was a candidate who became LESS rather than more persuasive the more you saw him.  It had become clear there wasn't a lot of "there" there, and on a superficial level, he had a McGavickian speaking voice, which really didn't help him.  He had a lot going for him (I loved him the first time I saw him), but just wasn't going to be able to seal the deal.  Paul was right to do what he did, just very wrong about the timing.  Ross should have been in the race much, much earlier so that things could have taken their natural course.

So, no.  Alben wouldn't have won in 2006.  Or 2004.
