Barack's Still Plotting: Hope & Reconciliation

From Maryland's WBAL:
Do you think Barack Obama poses a threat to the United States?

"Sure he's still out there, he's still plotting."

"I don't know i never really thought about that but I'm an American so I don't like him but I don't think we're focusing on like him at all, so I guess we're not paying enough attention to him." Etc...

In a recent CNN interview, Keith Ellison, the Muslim Congressman from Minnesota, responded, in part, to the furor over his use of the Koran in the private ceremony after his swearing-in by noting that “I’m about as American as they come.” His ancestors go back to Louisiana, from 1742, he said. Interestingly, in Barack Obama's case, it is often his family's short tenure as Americans, his status as a son of an immigrant, that is seen as a plus for a person who must overcome bigotry to attain political office. We see that the pundits who build their constituency on bigotry are already skipping over all these subtleties and merrily focusing on the task of poisoning the American mind on Obama and Ellison alike. The reasons and rhetoric of bigotry shift over the centuries, and the varying responses make it seem as if we are dealing with different issues. Underneath it's all one issue. Racism and religious bigotry pay.

I was brought up with stories of my ancestor, Ezekiel Hart, who was, my mother told me, the first Jew to be elected to British Parliament -- in Canada. That was 1807. A ruckus ensued when he took his oath of office on the Jewish Bible, and then Great Britain expelled him from the assembly anyway, on account of his religion. Here's the Wiki article on Ezekiel. My great grandfather on that side of the family, Archibald Hart, was elected in 1911 as a Democratic US Representative. He would not have won office, I'm sure, had there been in those days a right-wing noise machine to scream about his Jewish heritage. Mainstream culture then didn't look too kindly on what my grandmother referred to as "Jewish blood." Racism and religious bigotry pay. They paid back in 1807, they paid in 1911, and they pay in 2006. I like to think we're better off now than in 1807. At least our laws don't overtly enshrine bigotry. But where will we be in 2100?

What hope is there for moving beyond an us-against-them mindset that is so easily manipulated for political and economic gain? Can Barack Obama's candidacy overcome the hysteria that's being created here? Can it help us come to terms with some of these race and religion issues? Keith Ellison, in the CNN interview cited above, refers to "a learning gap we have to close." I'm hoping Obama finds a way in this campaign to help us close this learning gap. I hope he can get his "we are one American family" message across on race and religion -- as he did on partisanship in his 2004 speech at the Democratic National Convention.

My entire adult life I have been looking for a candidate that can unite the nation, a real leader and in each cycle, save perhaps for Clinton, the potential leaders did not end up getting to the final. Of those who we are hearing about now it is only Obama who gives me hope that this next cycle will be different.
Still, a Jewish, African American (not a descendant of slavery) who grew up in Hawaii and is interracially married, presents a wide spectrum of bigots a menu of things to hate.
If his charisma and intelligence can overcome the opposition stemming from so many prejudices and if in the end his candidacy is about who best should lead this nation, then 2008 will be a year for great personal growth.

First, it's marginalizing those pundits who are attacking him and at the same time, garnering sympathy for Obama.

Second, it shows that maybe the political arm of the MSM isn't in love with him so much after all.  From where I sit, that's a plus too.

The closest thing we've had to a POTUS with a non-anglo name that I can think of is Eisenhower--Germanic at a time when Americans were hardly thinking kindly of Germany.

The fact that was a war hero kinda helped, the spelling of the name was Anglicized and his first two names were Anglo. If his name had been Dietrich Adolph Eisenhaur, I don't think anything could've propelled him to the presidency.

Of course, there's always a first time.
