Cloned meat fast-tracked by Bush administrationToday the Food and Drug Administration issued a press release on cloned meat. Here's the Center for Food Safety press release. Here's the FDA's online comment form. This item, docket #: 2003N-0573, does not appear to be up yet. The power of government to "ok" new technologies that affect public health is a political issue. After all, it is powerful and wealthy companies that essentially control our political system with money and lobbying -- that generally push these new technologies. And, generally, they push ahead with whatever will increase the short-term bottom line, regardless of the public interest. According to the Center for Food Safety, despite misgivings in the scientific community, concerns in the food and dairy industries, and consumer polls that show most Americans don't want meat and milk from cloned animals, the Bush administration has fast-tracked FDA approval for cloned meat and milk -- without labeling requirements.
In accordance with the precautionary principle, I believe that the proponents of any new action that has potential for causing significant public harm should bear the burden of proof that this action is safe. Victims of harm caused by unnecessary actions should not bear the burden of proof that they have been harmed. It looks to me that there is not enough evidence of safety from unbiased sources to justify putting this new factor of uncertainty into our already compromised food system. What do you think?
