Cloned meat fast-tracked by Bush administration

Today the Food and Drug Administration issued a press release on cloned meat. Here's the Center for Food Safety press release.  Here's the FDA's  online comment form.  This item, docket #: 2003N-0573, does not appear to be up yet.

The power of government to "ok" new technologies that affect public health is a political issue.  After all, it is powerful and wealthy companies that essentially control our political system with money and lobbying -- that generally push these new technologies.  And, generally, they push ahead with whatever will increase the short-term bottom line, regardless of the public interest.  According to the Center for Food Safety, despite misgivings in the scientific community, concerns in the food and dairy industries, and consumer polls that show most Americans don't want meat and milk from cloned animals, the Bush administration has fast-tracked FDA approval for cloned meat and milk -- without labeling requirements.

In accordance with the precautionary principle, I believe that the proponents of any new action that has potential for causing significant public harm should bear the burden of proof that this action is safe.  Victims of harm caused by unnecessary actions should not bear the burden of proof that they have been harmed.  It looks to me that there is not enough evidence of safety from unbiased sources to justify putting this new factor of uncertainty into our already compromised food system.  What do you think?

yuk yuk.

that was RayGun, 1980 or so.

since those dark days, to these darker days, there have been hundreds of uses of government to screw over the little pee-on to the benefit of Monsanto / ADM / Boeing / Halliburton ...

And I don't really blame evil fascist pigs for acting like ... evil fascist pigs.

What are they gonna do? Tell the truth ! ha ha ha.

I partially blame the lazy dumb-asses who keep voting for lies,

and I REALLY blame the lazy / incompetent / corrupt Dem 'leaders' whose main tactic for decades has been to whine, snivel, capitulate...

ugh.

I downloaded Earthlings before it was nominated for an Academy award and was taken out of free download territory on the net.

Now keep it on my iPod. Definitely worth buying the DVD.

Would show that the casual way in which we assume we can "create", I mean, "clone" living matter is no less the casual way in which we assume we matter and any other species does not.

That's what the Nazis thought too.
More recently, any ethnic cleansing oligarchy would hail cloning as a way of cleaning up the planet and replacing it with the fungible and edible pure in heart, liver, breast, rumb roast, drumstick, brisket and ham hock.

A few years ago there was an essay contest organized in counterpoint to the WIPO's own essay contest. It used to be at www.wipout.net but do not visit that domain because it seems to have been hijacked or taken over by some unrelated and distinctively spammy entity.

This Register.co.uk article discusses the contest, but refer to the warning above before following any of the links.

So, the essays seem to be no more. I couldn't find a mirror, if anyone does could you post the URL here? Thanks.

GMO is only one step removed from cloning: all you're doing is intentionally altering that DNA before inserting it into a new egg.

Among some of the undesirable and "unintended" consequences of genetic engineering and farm crops that we know of:

  • Corn which is not fit for human consumption because it has been genetically modified to be pest-resistant (to manufacture toxins not natural to corn) finding its way into the human food supply.
  • Farmers being sued for royalties (and countersuing for damages) because genetically engineered crops contaminated and cross-bred with strains which they created specifically for their local conditions.
