A call for a candidate to run against Toby Nixon

For parts of 2004 and 2005, my then-girlfriend-now-wife and I lived in Kirkland and were constituents in the 45th LD.

The 45th is an enigma, with its boundaries encompassing rural areas like Carnation, Duvall and the Tolt River, and extending into the 'burbs and metro Kirkland, Woodinville, and Redmond. This district has been historically Repub for a while, until Laura Ruderman won a seat in the House of Representatives in 1998.

Larry Springer now occupies her seat and held it against a wingnut Doctor who's platform mimicked the national GOP's. That kind of rhetoric is a loser in this now swing district.

Rep. Toby Nixon is up for re-election this year, after being appointed in 2002, and barely winning that November. In 2004, he faced a candidate that didn't even raise a dime, and still got over 40% of the vote.

Now, in 2006 the opportunity seems ripe for moving this LD blue. Eric Oemig is running against Bill Finkbeiner for the senate seat. Rep. Springer will be gearing up for re-election shortly. Will there be someone to seriously challenge Toby Nixon?

More over the fold.

Nixon's views are hardly in line with his constituents. He is a self-proclaimed Libertarian, who believes in the Grover Norquist model to "cut government in half in twenty-five years, to get it down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub.":

Toby Nixon says his goal is to be known as "Mr. Privatization." The Republican state representative (45th District) explains: "My primary goal is to reduce the scope and size of government, [by] privatizing or contracting..."

"I always describe myself as a libertarian and am very upfront about it, even in Republican Party circles. More often than not, other people describe me as a libertarian before I even get a chance to use the word!”

Recently, Rep. Nixon has been trying to push a bill that would establish penalties on teachers if they go on strike.

On I-912, which he supported, Nixon obfuscated:

"I don't necessarily oppose a gas tax if the money is spent wisely. We waste billions of dollars on transportation spending that results in no congestion relief whatsoever. It doesn't improve the safety of our existing road system."

On equal rights, he has consistently voted no. He has also voted against voting reform, and for outsourcing state technology jobs to India and China. He is sponsoring a bill that would balkanize King County. Hardly in line with his constituents.

I would love to see Laura Ruderman take this anti-government libertarian who has been hiding in the republicon's caucus out.

Eric Oemig should consider switching races.  Finkbeiner got a lot of good press for his 2661 vote, and GLBT groups won't fight hard for him like they will against Nixon.

...and the organizational efforts of the Redmond Teachers association should be revived.  They were allegedly instrumental in Laura's campaigns, and are bound to have a bone to pick with Rep. Nixon.
