Ex-NARAL chief won't challange Democrat in PA [with poll]

Kate Michelman has realized that backing Casey is better than six more years of Rick "Frothy Mixture" Santorum.

Another victory for victory-minded Democrats everywhere, and another defeat for single issue Lose-o-crats.

Let's quote Michelman:

"Despite profound and fundamental differences, I have decided that Pennsylvania will be better served by electing Bob Casey to the U.S. Senate than giving his opponent another term," Michelman wrote in an op-ed to be published in The Inquirer on Sunday. "I do this knowing that I may forever regret not responding one more time to the clarion call of principle."

Principles are super, don't get me wrong.  But winning is more to my taste.  Purity has it's place (whiskey, baseball), but politics ain't one of 'em.

This news is a good sign.  This from MeteorBlades of DailyKos fame:

Now the question is whether ...

...Michelman will be able to persuade her old pals at NARAL to switch their endorsement of Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee to Democrat Matt Brown, whom she supports, if he wins the Democratic primary in Rhode Island.

In 1994, Michelman refused to do radio ads for Democratic Senator Harris Wofford because he was just under NARAL's 80% standard for his votes on reproductive rights issues. (Wofford lost to Rick Santorum, one of the worst anti-choice Republicans, who NARAL rates a 0%.) In 2005, Chafee registered at 65% on NARAL's voting gauge, 15 points below the standard that cost Wofford the organization's support 12 years ago.

Indeed.  If Wofford (D-PA) was at 80% and DID'NT get NARAL's support against Rick "Man on Dog" Santorum, why does NARAL support Lincoln Chafee, who get's a paltry 65% against PRO-CHOICE Democrats?

Give me the once-over.

PS to Management: Apparently diarists are unable to edit diaries.  So, please (if you can) correct the spelling errors listed: "challange" in title, and "get's" in the last sentence.  Thanks!

Again, flame away!

From a recent post at The Left Shue :
"In 2006, we have battle lines being drawn all over the country. From Pennsylvania, where the party of civil rights and a woman's right to choose, is promoting an anti-choice candidate for US Senate over a pro-choice Democratic activist with major Progressive backing."

"The most important result was that Chuck Pennacchio led the field of Senate candidates when voters were informed of the candidates' positions on important issues."

They are an advocacy group for abortion rights.

They do what's best for that advocacy.

What your "analysis" forgets are the abortion rights are popular 60-40 in this country AND abortion rights are the keystone to many of the privacy rights that Democrats believe in.

It is not a "single issue" separable from other issues. It is an understanding of liberty that is essential to a Progressive view of the Constitution.

So, your question of "purity versus winning" is nonsensical. First, Casey Jr's position on the issue is unpopular. Second, his position on the issue is out of step with numerous other central ideas of the Democratic party. Therefore, his view is DAMAGING to the party.

You have neither the ideas NOR the numbers on your side. Other than that, it's a great argument.
