The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution says:
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
But Dave Reichert might like to change that. He told David Postman yesterday that he's heard stories of babies being born in parking lots. Mexican women are "taking advantage of the system". They run over the border "just moments before the baby is born" and then they won't leave. This is a comical image, women running across the border to coyly drop babies in parking lots and then refusing to step back over the line. I'd be laughing more if the situation were not so grim and the statement so callous and reflective of an utter lack of pity and social and political understanding.
The reality is that people are dying out there in the desert. At No More Deaths we read of the case of Shanti A. Sellz and Daniel Strauss, who were taking two ill illegal entrants to medical care and were arrested. Well, that's a use of my tax dollars I don't support -- gearing up our legal system to crush mercy with incarceration. Representative Reichert's ridiculous characterization of the real world and the people in it is an insult to me -- and to my neighbors. The Rep's in above his head.
