Reichert: Nix the 14th Amendment: Too Many Babies in Parking Lots

The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution says:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

But Dave Reichert might like to change that. He told David Postman yesterday that he's heard stories of babies being born in parking lots. Mexican women are "taking advantage of the system". They run over the border "just moments before the baby is born" and then they won't leave. This is a comical image, women running across the border to coyly drop babies in parking lots and then refusing to step back over the line. I'd be laughing more if the situation were not so grim and the statement so callous and reflective of an utter lack of pity and social and political understanding.

The reality is that people are dying out there in the desert. At No More Deaths we read of the case of Shanti A. Sellz and Daniel Strauss, who were taking two ill illegal entrants to medical care and were arrested. Well, that's a use of my tax dollars I don't support -- gearing up our legal system to crush mercy with incarceration. Representative Reichert's ridiculous characterization of the real world and the people in it is an insult to me -- and to my neighbors. The Rep's in above his head.

Get ready to hear this, again and again. It's bullshit, right to the core.

If Reichert can come up with something like this, the Dems have a message for him, on this very issue:

BASTA YA!

That pesky amendment

Actually, the right wing folks have more complaints about this than just furrin babies.
Much of what they call "judical activism" and we call "fairness" has roots in the equal protection clause.
You know, things like Brown vs. Board of Education, Roe vs. Wade, Federal environmental laws and other inconvient intrusions on their ability to rape and pillage the country without consequence.

The most striking thing about this whole deal with the 14th is that there are people in power who can at will, and do so, adjust the constitution to fit their own wants. While the rest of us are just struggling just to meet our needs.

Most of all people in this great country agree the the constitution is the mold that holds our society together and at the same time there are those who chose to alter this very document for their own person views. Not needs, mind you, but wants-highly suspect and selfish to say the least.

We as a people and a country must stand fast and do whatever we can to stalemate or at the very least oppose these types of selfish changes or adjustments to out constitution.

Stand Tall.

Actually

I think the reality is too many illegals get a free pass to citizenship by having their children on this side of the border.

Read this House speech about so-called "birth citizenship".

"Nearly every industrialized country in the world requires at least one parent to be a citizen or legal immigrant before a child born there becomes a citizen. Not a single country in Europe automatically grants citizenship to the children of illegal immigrant parents."

If time allows, I'll continue to research this issue, as I think it's an important one where the majority of voters should be able to agree.
