Yankee Go Home!

A couple of new polls are out that suggest that the vast majority of the people surveyed (almost 3/4th) want the US to depart Iraq in no more than a year's time. The polls suggest that most of the respondents believe that the American presence in Iraq is making that country less secure. It is only a matter of time before we start hearing all of the neo-cons attacking the origins of the polls, the methodology and the motivation behind the pollsters, except............

...one of the polls was conducted by the US State Department and the respondents were the Iraqi people themselves! In a story in the September 27th Washington Post "A strong majority of Iraqis want U.S.-led military forces to immediately withdraw from the country, saying their swift departure would make Iraq more secure and decrease sectarian violence, according to new polls by the State Department and independent researchers."

"In Baghdad, for example, nearly three-quarters of residents polled said they would feel safer if U.S. and other foreign forces left Iraq, with 65 percent of those asked favoring an immediate pullout, according to State Department polling results obtained by The Washington Post." The Post article by staff writer Amit R. Paley continues, ""Majorities in all regions except Kurdish areas state that the Multi-National Force-Iraq (MNF-I) should withdraw immediately, adding that the MNF-I's departure would make them feel safer and decrease violence," concludes the 20-page State Department report, titled "Iraq Civil War Fears Remain High in Sunni and Mixed Areas." The report was based on 1,870 face-to-face interviews conducted from late June to early July."

The Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) at the University of Maryland conducted the second poll, released on the same day as the Washington Post article. Polling was conducted September 1-4 with a nationwide representative sample of 1,150 Iraqi adults. The PIPA poll found that some 71% of Iraqis felt that the US should leave Iraq within a year. However, the poll also found that, "Perhaps more significant, approximately the same number--78%--believe that "If the new Iraqi government were to tell the US to withdraw all of its forces within six months," the US would refuse to do so."

Oh yes, there is this bit of disturbing news as well, "Support for attacks against US-led forces has increased sharply to 61 percent (27% strongly, 34% somewhat). This represents a 14-point increase from January 2006, when only 47 percent of Iraqis supported attacks." Only 47%??? So much for flower petal greetings!

I believe it was George W.Bush, who once said, "We will leave when the Iraqis ask us to leave." Hey George! They are not asking - they are TELLING us we have overstayed our welcome.

Peace,
Chad (The Left) Shue
