Was the US Attorney for Western Washington forced out?

Last month I noted that the US Attorney for Western Washington was leaving, and that maybe Reagan Dunn, who had worked for that office, might return as the head honcho. According to TMPmuckraker and mcjoan at DailyKos, there might be something more to it than just a retirement. As John McKay resigned in Washington State, several other U.S. Attorneys also resigned or were forced out at the same time.

Sen. Diane Feinstein noticed this, made an issue of it earlier today:

According to a part of the PATRIOT Act, US Attorneys can now be appointed by the U.S Attorney General without having to go through the Senate. Why would they want our old U.S Attorney, and a handful of other attorneys, out of office?

As always Ridenbaugh Press has good things to say that provide excellent context to this and Blog Reload says:

If he's the victim of an ideological purge, though, I can't imagine what kind of stark raving mad ideologue would replace him. McKay has been the prosecutor involved with trying to get Marc Emery extradited to Seattle to face charges in the U.S. for mailing marijuana seeds to American customers, saying, "We have a huge regional, national and international issue here in the growing of marijuana in lower British Columbia."

If the Bush Administration has found someone more nutty than that to be the main federal prosecutor in Western Washington, god help us all.

I've been reading about this all day on different blogs. While there may very well be something to it, there are no facts available at this time to support this conclusion. There is only conjecture, which is one step above rumor.

As I recall from meeting McKay and seeing him speak at a forum about 3 years ago, he was very much in lockstep with the administration on the reauthorization of the Patriot Act, and even in implementing some new restrictions on our civil liberites (eg., allowing the govt. total access into medical records, etc). I also know that a great deal of finger-pointing occurred in the FBI's investigation of (former U.S. Attorney) Tom Wales' murder. It was only a few months ago that the Seattle FBI office investigating the murder was closed down, and the head of the investigation fired. After the Portland office took over the investigation, new leads were developed. This episode may have been a stress factor in McKay's decision to retire - but that's my conjecture.

So, when do we get the facts, instead of the conjecture? How about writing LTE's to the Times and P.I.? How about aksing those papers, which reported - ever so briefly - on McKay's retirement, to begin looking into the real reasons for his departure?
