Last month I noted that the US Attorney for Western Washington was leaving, and that maybe Reagan Dunn, who had worked for that office, might return as the head honcho. According to TMPmuckraker and mcjoan at DailyKos, there might be something more to it than just a retirement. As John McKay resigned in Washington State, several other U.S. Attorneys also resigned or were forced out at the same time.
Sen. Diane Feinstein noticed this, made an issue of it earlier today:
According to a part of the PATRIOT Act, US Attorneys can now be appointed by the U.S Attorney General without having to go through the Senate. Why would they want our old U.S Attorney, and a handful of other attorneys, out of office?
If he's the victim of an ideological purge, though, I can't imagine what kind of stark raving mad ideologue would replace him. McKay has been the prosecutor involved with trying to get Marc Emeryextradited to Seattle to face charges in the U.S. for mailing marijuana seeds to American customers, saying, "We have a huge regional, national and international issue here in the growing of marijuana in lower British Columbia."
If the Bush Administration has found someone more nutty than that to be the main federal prosecutor in Western Washington, god help us all.
