My wife and I would have just made it in a post I-957 world. But, this is seriously what they're thinking:

This measure would restrict marriage to a male and a female who are capable of having children together. Couples would be required to declare their ability to procreate children together in order to obtain marriage licenses. If a couple failed to procreate children within three years of marriage, their marriage would be subject to annulment. All other marriages would be defined as "unrecognized." Persons in unrecognized marriages would be ineligible to receive any marriage benefits.

Who are they? The Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance. ~~I hope to God this is a joke. Or a bunch of idiots.~~ Either way. Here's the story at the Longview Daily News.

Update [2007-2-5 23:33:33 by emmettoconnell]:: I'm the idiot, but either way, its pretty funny. The guy behind it is making a very good point about how the state Supreme Court is rationalizing state intervention into marriage. But, boy I need to learn how to take a joke.

I will sign the petition....

Emmett, Postman brought this up yesterday. Part of the reasoning behind the initiative has to do with the language of the recent WA Supreme Court decision (Andersen v. King County)in support of our DOMA.

The Court said, in part, "it's a legitimate state interest to restrict marriage to couples who can procreate."

This initiative would force the Supreme Court to back up its rhetoric. As the group says on its website:

"...By floating the initiatives, we hope to prompt discussion about the many misguided assumptions which make up the Andersen ruling. By getting the initiatives passed, we hope the Supreme Court will strike them down as unconstitutional and thus weaken Andersen itself. And at the very least, it should be good fun to see the social conservatives who have long screamed that marriage exists for the sole purpose of procreation be forced to choke on their own rhetoric."

Postman says the group needs 224,800 signatures. We already have three signers amongst the commentors at Postman's Blog.
