John McKay digest and why he's important

Anyway, why John McKay is important, and not just in a "political purge" sort of way. McKay is a Republican, but apparently like Sam Reed, one who didn't carry enough water for the cause in the 2004 election. I fell in love with the term "honest broker" in terms of politics when I read Ron Suskind's "The Price of Loyalty," the story of Paul O'Neil (former treasury secretary) in the early Bush years. not carrying enough water for the caused him to leave the fold as well. When everyone is an ideologue, when there are no more honest brokers left, then politics really sucks.

Postman's article, which Chad links to above, makes that clear.

Emmett -- you're right, that the issue at the center here is the Republican party has become so corrupt that it will only tolerate ideologues.  This is very dangerous.

Excerpts from Michael Hood's 2005 interview with John McKay, published in 3/07:

Ousted Federal Prosecutor John McKay Speaks

The Heart of a Growing Scandal.

Raw Story

"The bigger scandal, however, almost surely involves prosecutors still in office," Krugman writes. "The Gonzales Eight were fired because they would not go along with the Bush administration's politicization of justice. But statistical evidence suggests that many other prosecutors decided to protect their jobs or further their careers by doing what the administration wanted them to do: harass Democrats while turning a blind eye to Republican malfeasance."

Excerpts from Krugman's column:
#

Donald Shields and John Cragan, two professors of communication, have compiled a database of investigations and/or indictments of candidates and elected officials by U.S. attorneys since the Bush administration came to power. Of the 375 cases they identified, 10 involved independents, 67 involved Republicans and 298 involved Democrats. The main source of this partisan tilt was a huge disparity in investigations of local politicians, in which Democrats were seven times as likely as Republicans to face Justice Department scrutiny.
