Karl Rove video calls Washington State "voter fraud" hotspot

[Front paged, NM]

"Voter fraud," while it is something more than nonexistent, is also rare.  This makes sense because voter fraud gains a single vote (hardly enough to decide even a single election) while risking a five year prison sentence.

On the other hand, election fraud by insiders like vendors or government officials has the capability of delivering the desired result:  the election result.  Moreover, with electronic voting a single person with access to a single machine can alter an entire county's results with an appropriate virus that deletes itself, while a similarly election-altering "voter fraud" would require thousands of voters to be involved.   There are also facts like election officials in heavily Democratic Cuyahoga County, Ohio who would rather commit election recount-rigging felonies than do a recount of the 2004 presidential election ballots -- because they want to protect the first numbers they put out there and avoid work.    The few media that cover this major story of election cover-up alter the story to call officials in supervisory positions "workers" and otherwise minimize and fail to report that they spent two full days illegally "preparing" the recount to make sure it came out OK.  See http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/news/state/16536269.htm   For better coverage of this story and other elections coverage see bradblog:  http://www.bradblog.com/?p=4266

The Ohio elections officials were sentenced to the maximum sentence of 18 months for rigging the recount to be nonrandom and expose no problems, while the maximum sentence in the typical case of a single double-voting 'voter fraud' is substantially higher than or disproportionate to insider rigging of entire election results or recounts.

The very big differences between both the risk of voter fraud and election fraud and their likelihood of investigation, as well as their disproportionate penalties is a story that should not be ignored.  Instead, it should be pointed out  whenever someone is pooh-poohing (appropriately) "voter fraud" as a big source of election fraud and error that the real risk is election fraud.  Otherwise, democracy will remain undefended against the real risks while it shoots mosquitoes with cannons to increase "public confidence" in elections.

So, partly to illustrate this point, here's Karl Rove making exactly this misleading point about voter fraud, and talking about Washington state being on his "hot spot" list for "voter fraud":  http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/013817.php

In some places American elections are "looking like elections in places with mirrored sunglasses"...says Karl Rove.  Rove forgets that the guys with the mirrored sunglasses in banana republics are insiders, usually government or military officials.   Check out the Talking Points memo link above for video and comment.

For some brief but important expansion on how electronic voting really magnifies this voter fraud vs. election fraud gap, see this blog and my comment to it:  http://www.rmfo-blogs.com/daniel/2007/04/24/here-is-the-fundamental-problem-with-voting-machines/

It's very interesting that "Rove gives a run-down of six vote fraud 'hotspots'. Of those six 'hotspots', the US Attorneys from three ended up on the chopping block."

I have no time to look now, but would wonder if the three attorney generals who didn't end up on the chopping blocks are the ones who did investigate vote fraud.  We know, of course, that Washington's AG refused to investigate it, as he saw no credible evidence of a criminal pattern -- and of course he paid with his job for that.

Paul Lehto presents a very articulate discussion of why voters need to concern themselves with the potential for election fraud vs voter fraud. The real security plan to protect against election fraud is transparent vote counting (secret software and hidden vote counting inside a machine is the antithesis of transparency)and citizen participation in this process is the only true and effective security plan.

And, to illustrate yet another method for insiders to manipulate elections, I urge  everyone to read this artice from the FreePress.  In Ohio 2004 the GOP hijacked election returns.
